Ive been plagued with dropped connections for a long time, longer most likely than I've actually realised. My disconnection rate first came to light when I signed up with my new Isp Adsl24. Below is the 25th of last months connection logs.

The routers I own are old and possibly not designed to handle upto 8Mb+ on a 1.35KM line approx, i.e. compared to the Thomson and Netgear routers that are doing the rounds at the moment. With a multitude of reviews from users who claimed that the Thomson was great for holding sync at low snr and high attenuation (60DB+) I got the Thomson Speedtouch 585 v6 ordered. Its vital apparently to make sure you get the V6 which as far as I can gather is distinguisable by checking the bottom of the modem where you will find reference to V6. The older V5 did not have the Broadcom chip which is responsible for the amazing feats of line sync in less than favourable conditions.
My modem arrived today I unpacked it and got it setup, Now lets throw DMT into the mix. DMT is a modem tweaking tool which comes with some really neat features availlable to download free here http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ for translation go here http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr paste the url in select german to english hey presto!
Now go here for a good guide on how to take advantage of DMT great features.

As for my connection problems they have disappeared and as a nice cherry on top for me here is a screen shot from Modem Snr connection rate graphing tool I use called RouterStats 2.5 its compatible with the 585 V6. Download here http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
The graph shows at 21:27 a complete dropout on the SNR basically this would have immediately knocked any of my old modems for six but not the 585 V6 it didn't blink kept on going. No loss of connection in ISP logs and that means no re-sync which means no ip profile changes which is really nice
You can easily see how noisey the line can be when you compare these 2 graphs.
The Thomson Speedtouch is up and running now 12 hours + no troubles, and with some tweaks from dmt I am syncing at 1000Kb/s faster than normal (usually 5500Kb/s)
