Criterea:
opinion must be based on perceived longevity and scalability of power.

I vote for the Q6600.

Ive had mine since early 2008 and still have no need to upgrade. its an absolute power house and work horse, clocked to 3ghz on air with ease on stock volts. am sure it will do much more but I simply have no need. Quite remarkable given it was the first generation of quad core.

surely one of, if not the best CPU ever made in terms of power and longevity ?

IBM compatable CPUS`s ONLY
none of that risc / Motorola / ARM nonsense.

Barton 2500 M or E8400, close call but probably the Barton as there wasn't really anything to compete with it at the time for the price.

I would say the i7 920 because it was very well priced and offered great performance.

It made 4Ghz common and at an affordable price.

P4 2.4c - very overclockable (3.3GHz+), doesn't run too hot being Northwood, high fsb, HT tech. The Barton was a good clocker but nothing special tech wise and lacked the heatspreader that AMD finally brought in with the AMD 64.
