Greatest CPU of all time ? what gets your vote?

Wonder how many of us are just voting for the first chip we enjoyed overclocking.

I vote for the e8400, purely because I was so fond of mine.

No-one gonna say P4? Compared to the P3 that went before it was fairly revolutionary. In 2000 you got a 1ghz P3 and it was a massive change, yet in 2001 you could get a P4 which was 2ghz, which is a huge improvement in a year! And then in 2002 I think they went to about 3.8ghz with hyper-threading.

I'm also gonna say the AMD 965 BE, because I can. :D

Another vote for the stonking XP-M2500+ Barton.

It was only this time last year that I upgraded from my old XP-M2500+ (@2.5ghz) to another great value CPU the E8400 (@4ghz) I got great value for money from that little chip and it's still going strong now in my daughters PC.

Barton 2500 - a lovely cheap chip and a good clocker.

but it's beaten by my current and still going strong E4300. Clocked comfortably from 1.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz on air. I know of many who got a 100% OC out of these chips under water.

I note a couple have said P4 CPU`s... seriously??? the only reason they clocked so high was because you had to do that to get any bloody work done, sluggish useless lazy CPU`s with p**s poor performance per Mhz.

To be fair Northwood P4s were pretty good at the time. They clocked good, and had better IPC than Prescott.

Northwood P4s are probably the best P4s that Intel made.

That's with an enormous dose of hintsight and a pinch of salt.

If they were that "p**s poor" then surely Intel would have been brought to their knees by a better alternative from a competitor.

Some variants were underwhelming such as the Socket 423. Northwood was excellent. Prescott and the later variants were showing the strain, but proved other beneficial technology such as the die shrink that helped develop the Core line.

An opteron 146 cabne 0530 that I bought for £90 new and later sold on ebay for £280 just because it was a golden stepping :p

Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core. That baby is still running to this day under 2.2GHz (from 1.8GHz) almost 6yrs after I first bought it. Of course it's the only AMD CPU I now own seeing as I have a Q6600 and two i7 920 D0s lol...

Athlon 64 and A64 X2 spanked Intels bottom for a long time. Core was essentially a development of the P3 mobile chip if I recall.
