Greatest game companies?

I don't think I've seen sierra mentioned unless they're just a publishing enterprise?

Sierra made some stunning games. I missed them off my list. Games I'd say warrant being on there are Manhunter: New York, Manhunter: San Francisco, Kings Quest Series, Leisure Suit Larry Series and a few others.

Ocean.
They did release some carp to be fair, but they were pretty much -the- software developer of the 80's. Really influential company that set the foundations for this industry.

Valve.
They code their games so beautifully, which is really rare these days. There's other reasons they're good but I can't be arsed listing them.

Ultimate Play The Game.
Jet Pac, Alien 8, Sabre Wulf, Atic Atac, Gunfright etc etc. No explanation necessary for Ultimate, they melted faces and thats that.

What about Bethesda for Morrowind and Oblivion?

I would also put up Infocom - they were true pioneers in the early days of PC gaming.

I would've put them in my list, but they would have to make more than 2 great games (1 great game in my book FO3), the quality is their just not the quantity.

Wait what? No quantity in the elder scrolls games or fall out 3?:eek:

Surprised no one has mentioned Epyx.
They made some amazing groundbreaking Commodore 64 games in the mid 80's - The Games series (Summer Games I & II, Winter Games, World Games, California Games + Impossible Mission, Pitstop II)

Blizzard - A pc exclusive dev that only produces polished and very well optomised games (bear in mind I have never played wow)

Also showing that pc gaming can still be highly profitable

My Favourites from the early PC gaming era

Origin
Wing Commander series. Ultima
Ultima Underworld one and two.

Lucasarts
Monkey Island series was great so was Grim Fandango and Sam N Max.

Westwood
Lands of Lore and Hand of Fate series.
Later the C and C series.

8 bit games early 80's
Ultimate Play rhe Game
No one else came close.

Forgot about Beyond Software - C64 stuff - Lords of Midnight, Doomdark's Revenge Quake Minus 1. All really advanced for the time, fantastic strategy.

Yeah, I overlooked Beyond also, LoM & DDR are in my top 10 games of all time too :( Spectrum Versions of course ;)

Shadowrun, Enigma Force and Sauderons Shadow are another 3 great games from them, IIRC they even did a Superman game.

I will always have a soft spot for Magnetic Scrolls. Guild of Theives was a classic for me.

Indeed, I still have my Bank of Kerovnia card that came in the box ;)

Its a pitty such games have been forgotten.

The Pawn is another classic of theirs. Magnetic Scrolls and Level 9 were the masters of the text adventure.

This makes me want to get my Speccy and Amiga out of the attic or fire up some emulators ;)
