Well, I have to say, mine would be when I was fighting the numidians and had 150 men defending a town. They had 1500. I held them up at the gate with my phalanx. My arrow men kept raining fire arrows down on them and the boiling oil kept burning them. my archers held off the men at the top walls. Then when my phalanx was nearly gone, I charged them with my cavalry which put them into disarray and I killed there general and that was that. :D 101 loss, 1103 killed :D

yep same thing happened to me

1 unit of archers and 1 unit of legionary cohort

don't remember how many of them but i just let them come in the burning oil got them then my cohorts finished them off

ended up killing 800 and only lost 30

got a heroic victory

Not really either but i've only just got the game and had my first almighty battle last night.

4 full armies of britannia troops, totalling about 6000 combined coming down on my settlement of 1000 backed up by 800. I managed to hit 2 of them and killed 2500/3000, losing about half my troops. Then took on the second 3000 with my 900 and took them down to about 400 before my army routed and they took the settlement.

Good thing is i have 2 full reserve armies on their way, and apparantly that 6000 was their entire army, so i'm going to take back my settlement and storm their capital.

Get the Total War era's pack, you get all the total war games for £29 in one box. I have them all already but still want to buy it lol.

after some guys pounded my city, there was a gap in the wall. Of course this happened to be pretty much on the other side of the start point for the 2 armies. queue the ai's running around my entire 4th gen city getting mashed by towers whilst my archers ran out of arrows hitting them. Only to be greeted by 2 phalanx cohorts. By which time most were running (back past the towers)

8937 - 3

i won. was a long while ago though :(

I had almost exactly the same thing happen, but on an open field with my elite army, with everyone fully experienced and upgraded.

I won, quite comfortably! :D

Rome is an awsome game, you can just keep on going on it and its quite hard to run out of challenges, my main trouble was keeping enough armies on the map, as I used 1 army and a reserve army for attacking together, and then 1 army per 5 territories on the border to defend them, with a small enough garisson to defend each settlement.

Worked well, by altering the years on the map I managed to get all the territories under my control, although I really really do hate the Egyptians!

Agreed.

RTW Vanilla is bit pants to be honest, what you need is a breath of realism in the game.

Will change the way you play RTW for a long while, haven't gone back to RTW Vanilla since :)

Zip : Phalanx are easier to break using cavalry and two fronts of troops. You need to keep the front occupied and pick at the rear with cavalry and then retreat and recharge.

Is that a good mod then? I got RTW back at release but I got really bored of it quickly. I much preferred Shogun and Medieval to be honest...is it worth giving total realism a go then, does it change much? My biggest quibbles with the game were the masses of seiges compared to open field battles, the battles were too fast/morale too low, and AI was worse than the previous games, which is an odd step backward.

When it's at it's best, RTW is very enjoyable, but unfortunately seems to fall below it's predecessors overall, for me.

Its RTW realism, a bigger map, more nations and more turns. No more bulldozing your way through the world, conquest will take time and patience :)

Oh and more and new nations.

Damm straight it will, You just get the upper hand and they attack all your boats and block your ports then build up am Army while your getting rid of the boats and then they counter attack  :p

Who did you first start with Spacky?

Rome of course :)

Conquered the penisula of Italy was my first goal, stick a fort in the north whilst I did this to keep the gauls off my back and then plowed south conquering. Then push north to the mountains and stick forts at each valley path to keep everything out. Left it like that for years building up italy and building improvements etc.

Then I either strike out at gaul and germania or spain. Alternatively I go for carthage but they keep uprising every so often. If I take north africa it makes conquering europe easier and if I take europe it makes conquering africa easier. Depends who annoys me first, normally Carthage like a poke but once I build up huge fleets they back off.

Also Germania can be a fun nation to play, their troops with their missiles are awesome :)
