This is why you cannot compare him to SAF. A great coach but he never built 3 teams.

It's harder now. SAF had no one on the same planet with regards to finances and could take the best players off challengers at a whim. No one could consistently challenge uniteds spending power during his era. Most of the spine of those '3' rebuilt teams stayed the same. He also added some shocking buys to those rebuilds.

City show how hard the standard is now to maintain even two titles on the trot. I think they are crap this year by their standards and will do similar to 16/17 when they gave up when it fell apart and finished 3rd. I mean look at how hard Liverpool had to work and the standard they set to beat City, I bet they wish they could have had this weak standard to go against!

Yeah, different era for sure. You could see how much Fergie was struggling at the end of his time at United with all the oil clubs and their money. We beat City to the title at a time when they weren't anything like as good as they are now, other clubs weren't as strong either.

Fergie is one of the best ever but its a completely different game these days in the PL.

How much he was struggling? He went 3rd,3rd,2nd,1st,1st,1st,2nd,1st,2nd,1st in his last decade of management. Two of those 2nd at the end was a dodgy offside goal at O.T to hand the title to Don Carlos chelsea side and the last one was lost on goal difference. Last one was won at an absolute canter.

I like laughing at United as much as anyone but fergie was paper over a LOT of cracks in Utd squad. Years of under spending as well, Stoke were spending more than Utd!

As I said, different era. United had a very solid squad in 8-9 positions on the pitch without a massive turnover. We didn't need to spend big to keep up with the other contenders. Fergie squeezed every drop from those United squads but we won the league by beating the bread and butter sides who were pretty poor. The actually quality of our football near the end was really poor at times. Effective but not attractive.

United we're winning the league with 80pts back then. For a few seasons recently that would have put you about 20 points off the pace.

I'm not taking anything away from Fergie but lets not pretend the football landscape wasn't completely different back then and United were a big fish in a smaller pond. Now we are a big fish in a lake.
