Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 19th February 2023]

Great stuff from us today, given how poor Rashford had become, his current form is incredible. At times he looked like he was ready to retire from football - it was that bad.

Its funny how the United fanbase is do divided over Rashford. We have the people who think that we should write a blank cheque for his next contract. The ones who worry that he is just in a crazy purple patch and we should sell him for silly money in the summer and those who think that there is a sensible third way.

I think it would be madness to give him a contract that isn't heavily performance incentivised with a good base salary. I don't care if we pay him £400k/week as long as £200k of that is performance bonuses. As you say, last season he was abject. If you sold him on that season alone you would have got £20-30m and thats because hes English. My fear is that he returns to some sore of middle ground but I really hope he doesn't.

Show what confidence can do. He gets in front of goal at the moment and you expect him to score. If he doesn't you don't get the impression it has any effect on his game and he will just put the next one away.

I know i'm one of Rashford's harshest critics... he has all the physical ability but IMO doesn't have mental (almost psychic) awareness and ability to read and play the game like top talents.

What this patch shows for me is that he's a raw athlete who if he has the confidence, he doesn't think his decisions and he just goes for it. He's still missing chances, he's still lashing at the ball but he's not dithering on it, he's putting his foot through it and he's getting more space and more opportunity on goal because he isn't labouring on the ball in the moment.

I still personally see the same weaknesses, he doesn't see his other players on the pitch, he just drills the ball rather than placing it and still tries to play the ball and himself through players. I think he works in a Ten Hag team because if we can get players to manoeuvre the ball and create the space for him to play in then we're seeing what he can do. I just wish he'd learn a little from Henry and get his head up a little more as he could be ruthless.

Glad to see he's enjoying his football, he did not look mentally great the last couple of seasons and that's difficult to watch.

Reckon we will get £30-40m. He’s still a decent defender for the right team. He wants to play and I think he will take a pay cut to make it happen.
I'm not so sure. £30-40m sounds OK in the context of "hey, we could sell someone for half what we paid for them, no worries" but judged on merit it's a bit of a rip off. If MU had paid £45m and sold him for £28m that might fall into the "good business all round" category, but I can't see many teams queuing up to pay over £35m for him plus the £10m/year wage, and equally MU might be wary of the loss of face from letting him go for for say £25m with 3 years left on his contract.

It's a bit like the Pepe situation, he cost £72m but realistically what proportion of that is someone going to pay, probably be lucky to get £18m for him which again would seem OK had Arsenal paid £40m, but not £72m.

In the current climate of football, big money gambles are constantly happening now. I don’t think it’s really a case of losing face if you lose the odd gamble.

We lost on Pepe, Utd lost on Maguire, Chelsea lost big on Lukaku.

Chelsea have pretty much rolled the dice this winter. Both Mudryk and Fernandez could end up being losses, more Mudryk.

In less recent times you’ve had some bad losses

Liverpool - Carroll
Chelsea - Torres, Drinkwater
Man Utd - ADM

Those a few off the top of my head

Hes still a first choice England CB, there was a reason United paid that money for him and the current market is silly. £35-40m for a PL proven CB is not that much. I don't think he will ask for anything like his current wage either. I don't think hes the sort of player who would rather collect his salary for another 2 years at £200k/week instead of playing every week for £120-130k/week.

I might be wrong. Will be interesting to see in the summer.
