Yeah doesnt make much sense to me at all, you even get an automatic booking if you keep your shirt on but pull it up to cover your head with it, which makes even less sense.... and he had another shirt underneath. Do you get a red for shorts off or a 3 match ban, lol.
I think it's dual purpose, they don't really want people doing the messages on shirts thing because it might bring the league into disrepute. Also they don't want people removing their shirts after 10,000 women became spontaneously pregnant when Ryan Giggs removed his shirt back in the day.I'm still not entirely sure that I get the thinking behind giving a yellow card for taking your shirt off. Seems very odd to me.
Thing is, take the Palace player today, he had no message underneath and was wearing another top under his shirt. So no message, no nakedness (because a naked chest is SO offensive ) , yet gets a booking for taking his shirt off. I see some people say its for excessive celebration, yet you are allowed to do a silly little dance or punch the corner flag or make symbols/letters with your hands and fingers , all without getting booked, but heaven help you if you lift up your shirt !I think it's dual purpose, they don't really want people doing the messages on shirts thing because it might bring the league into disrepute. It shouldnt, I mean I've never had the urge to rip my shirt off in life, so should be easy enough to resist the urge but its just a thing of logic to me. Cant see why taking a shirt off is any worse than running up to fans and screaming at them or dancing or hand signals or a naked chest is any more offensive than naked knees and elbows. Dont see any logical reason for it to be a booking. It's easy just to have one rule really, it shouldn't be a hard one to follow.
