Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [11th - 12th November 2023]

Wonder what the second yellow to straight red ratio is and if that is any different? Its clear they are booking players far more easily this season, dissent in particular.

I know that I shouldn't do this but I did a little digging and I think I have unmasked who @omnomnom is in real life...

It all makes sense now in light of the spate of red cards this season

Maybe last seasons number was low? 30 reds is one every 12 games so its not even one per week.
It was particularly low. There were 43 reds the season before last, 48, 44 and 47 in the seasons before that too. That said at the current rate we're going at, we're on course to see over 80 red cards this season.

I think there's a number of reasons why we've seen more red cards this season than before. Firstly I think we've seen a disproportionate number of terrible decisions this season. Liverpool for example have picked up 4 red cards this season and 2 of those have subsequently been confirmed as wrong and I'm sure there have been more. VAR and the way we over analyse challenges has got worse and worse and we're looking for reasons why something is a red card now. And lastly, and supporters can't complain about this with their constant appealing and complaining, nothing is just a foul any more. Almost every foul has to be at least a yellow card. Challenges in years gone by that would have just been a free-kick are now 'blatant yellows' and the ref 'is a disgrace' if he doesn't book the player.
