Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 19th May 2021]

You're still going to have the issue of different refs having different opinions on whether the attacker was going to get to the ball or not.

The question then becomes "which is the lesser evil". Would it be worse that we see a lot of penalties given for these sort of fouls or that occasionally a penalty wasn't given that should have been. Many of the decisions by referees that have been particularly controversial this season have been straight up awful. That isn't the rules, its the bad refs.

I know what you are saying but I really hate the direction football is going in where we are actively encouraging cheating and penalties are dictating far too many games.

I don't think they shouldn't be given as penalties though. If a defender fouls a forward in the area then I believe a penalty should be given.

I don't think it's cheating when a forward gets to the ball and is fouled, whether he has a chance to keep possession or not. You could argue that he's played for the foul but again, I don't really have an issue with it - he's played the ball and the defender fouled him, that's all that matters.

I don't think the Werner situation yesterday falls into this category though. Werner doesn't play the ball. All Werner is looking to do is create contact between him and Tielemans and I had no issue with the penalty not being given. Unfortunately situations like that will be given quite often though and I don't see how you can fix that. Determining whether Werner is playing the ball or trying to instigate contact is subjective and will result in different opinions.

Really rate Anguissa, as a Liverpool fan I'd take him and Eze this summer as two relatively realistic signings
Your Eze dream isn't looking likely. It's being reported that he's suffered a serious achilles injury in training and will be out well into next season.

Yup, think that's gone. I guess the good news for Palace is that he probably won't be moving this summer. Hope he doesn't suffer any ongoing damage.

What are your thoughts on Anguissa? I reckon he'd add something

I can't say I've paid a huge amount of attention to him. I am (or was) well onboard the Bissouma train but another african player in an AFCoN year seems doubtful to me and that would apply to Anguissa too.

He keeps mouthing the balls gone...so? He's still been taken out.
The rules need to be changed. There's no way Watkins was getting the ball but the keeper's gone through him. I'd award a yellow to the player committing the foul and nothing more, as long as the attacking player had no chance of winning the ball in the first place.
