Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th - 8th October 2023]

Brentford did just park the bus the entire game though.
We're missing 7 first choice starting 11 and are resigned to playing freebies. What do you expect? You brought on one player off the bench who cost more than every one of our players who featured today... starting 11 and subs combined!

I thought we did pretty well all things considered, just couldn't hold out. Plenty of our lot didn't deserve to be on the losing side, particular Ethan Pinnock.

We played two freebies :p

Pinnock did play well though, shame about all the time wasting (which again was mysteriously unpunished for a smaller side yet again)

Tbf there wasn't loads - we weren't kicking the ball away or being awful, just taking about as long as possible within the appropriate time frame. No one got booked for it?

I thought there was going to be more than 6 mins added in all honesty. Glad there weren't otherwise he'd have scored a ******* hat trick. Could say the same about your lot and yellow cards. If we're getting booked for late challenges and off the ball pull-backs, then Maguire and Mount should've got yellows... but no. 6-0 to us on that score.

Still can't believe we lost it like that - you'd not created much all game until that point.

We were missing out entire back four.

Our problem is that we are so shaky at the back that when we inevitably go 1-0 down other teams can just park the bus and we can't do anything to combat it. I think if we had gotten the first goal the game would have been different yet that never happens in our current state.

By my reckoning, that back for you had still cost £135m... despite one of them being a free signing!

To put it into context, our midfield three cost £7m combined - none of them free - whilst our right wing back cost £50k!

It is irrelevant comparing figures. If Brentford go in for a player you charge 5 million. When United go in for that same player it is 35 million. Simply because of who we are.

It is no different to when you take your Kia for a service and it costs £40 but the same one using the same parts at a Lamborghini dealership costs £4000.

It's far from irrelevant comparing figures. The correlation between budget and league position shows an almost total link, with very few outliers - like BHA and us.

We can't buy players at the moment - had probably the weakest summer transfer window I'm many seasons, as those players we would have bought for £10m now cost £20m+ and very few want to join us. We bid £8m for Brennan Johnson two years ago, and then had £14m accepted 18 months ago before Cooper pulled the plug. This season he went for almost ~£40m, so price inflation affects all team in this league if you want players who'll improve your starting 11. More than half of our starting line up were our Championship players...

Is Onana going to make a mistake/not make a save a competent keeper would every single match? Surely he needs to be dropped?

If ETH won't drop Rashford or Onana then surely ETH has to go? Why so stubborn? Would a new manager be allowed to drop them?

I think it’s more than that too. Players at clubs like Brentford have more time to settle and have less pressure put of them from the get-go. One poor performance isn’t going to get this forum – and all of social media – frothing.

I’m sure Onana would be doing just fine at Brentford. :p

It isn't irrelevant as the more success you have the more you have to pay for players.

Leicester had to do the same but they didn't have the revenue to sustain it. Brighton will be no different because as soon as clubs twig they are after their player they will instantly add 5-10 million. Westham are going through a similar phase but they are in a little bit of a better financial situation due to their sales and their club historically having a big fan base.
