Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 10th November 2024]

this season is showing how much we missed Joelinton and Willock last season. Willock is such a lovely footballer and Joelinton is just a phenomenon.

If we can get him settled on the right like on the left we should turn our attention to a CB again. Burn was lucky not to be set off and given a red card.

Longstaff was added back into provide some protection for the back 4 which wasnt on show yesterday.
Ref was horrific, Yates could/should have had 2 red cards yet he didn’t even get a yellow

I'm far from a Liverpool fan but Salah has been one of, if not the best and most consistent player in the premier league in the last 5 years or so. Not seen much online or otherwise suggesting anything but. His "worst" season, based only on goal return in that time is 23! Game has changed a little over the years but he has outscored Robbie Fowler and played 100 games less, he's been a phenomenon tbh and he's not even a "proper" centre forward.
Yep, probably the best in the world I'd say.

Forget the last 5 years, his record stands up throughout the PL era. Shearer and Henry are typically regarded as the best forwards over that time. Salah's record for Liverpool is 221 goals and 99 assists from 29500 minutes (223 & 102 in 30400 mins if you include his Chelsea spell), Henry's for Arsenal was 228 goals and 98 assists in 30500 minutes and Shearer's combined Blackburn & Newcastle stats are (I've discounted his Southampton to make it fairer for him) 330 goals and 91 assists in 49800 minutes.

Salah's record for Liverpool is almost identical to Henry's (fractionally better in fact) and they're both a fair way ahead of Shearer in terms of strike rate, however Shearer has greater longevity. Salah is without doubt right up there alongside any forward that's played in this country in the past 30 odd years.

pah!

He's no Antony

Since debuting for the club in February 2020, he’s played in more matches than any other player for a Premier League club across all competitions, while only Mohamed Salah (198) has been involved in more goals for such clubs than him (155 – 83 goals, 72 assists).

Bruno.

Imagine if he played in a decent squad!?

Shearer was playing for a crap team for the vast majority of his career and as with Henry was playing in a era where getting chopped was a normality. Salah will go down as a PL legend no doubt but comparing different era's is just pointless. How would Shearer do in today's football?

No doubt replacing Salah will be a very difficult task for Liverpool though.

Shearer and even Henry were also playing in an era where you had numerous opposition teams/players that today would be lower end Championship level if not League One. And as Vandle points out in the post I replied to, Salah's scored his goals while not being an centre forward - he starts from a (slightly) deeper and wider position and has far more defensive responsibility than those.

And I wouldn't disagree that you can't definitively compare players of different eras, which is why I've not said x was better than y, but you can make a broad assessment and as I said, there's no doubt Salah will go down alongside the best forwards of the PL era.

Salah will go down as one of the best players in the PL but the reason you can't compare generations is because you end up suggesting things like "the quality was worse back then" and ignore that perhaps the elite players of that time would also be the elite players in the current game and they would likely just be better than they were. Usain bolt probably wouldn't have been running sub 10s if you moved him back to the 50s. You are a product of your time and so are your opposition.

Would Shearer have scored more if he was in as good a side as Salahs Liverpool? Of course he would. Would Henry? Of course he would. Team sports are even harder to compare between generations as there is so much circumstance and external factors to consider.

What would be interesting is to see how the players scored against the top teams of their time. I'm pretty sure Salah has done it against all, and also produces magic when the team aren't playing well/there aren't many opportunities?

League 2 Haaland only scores against the small teams etc. Bruno has done it in a championship quality team etc.

Has anybody suggested that x from the 90s wouldn't have been elite had he played in the 2020's? And why can't you make comparisons between eras? I wouldn't want to make a 100% definitive claim when comparing somebody from the 90s with somebody from today but you can look at what they done relative to the opposition they were up against and make a fairly good assessment.

I thought the BBC team of the week might get better once Crooks had left....turns out I was wrong.

No Ipswich players, no Baleba (he owned that City team! I'd include Verbruggen but that may be bias :p), 3 United players (yes, they did well, but it's a poor leicester team).

No arguments putting Fernandes and Mazroaoui in there but not quite sure why Onana is there. Didn't have much to do in the United game.

And as **** as Deeney is, he is a country mile better than Crooks. Crooks who decides that actually, most of the players he likes this week are defenders so he just puts 6 defenders in his team.
