Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 26th March 2014]

Terrible performance from start to finish. Sunderland flooded their back line and we couldn't break them down. Games like today show you why Flanagan isn't a long term answer for us - he offers nothing in attack and time and again we worked the ball left only to have to cut back inside and build again. These are the matches when you need your fullbacks providing an outlet for you.

At 2-0 we should have gone on to win by 4 or 5 but rather than concentrating on killing the game off, we were more intent on scoring the perfect goal with little 1 touch moves and flicks

And Kevin Friend's a total ****. That was an atrocious performance from him - not just a few big decisions that he got completely wrong but countless small fouls that he let go over and over.
Right, so it doesn't, and you're just spacking out. I'm glad we've cleared that up! :)

No Pigeon was spot on. As soon as Sunderland made their changes they were getting at us time and time again and it was clear that we needed to make a change to our system. Their goal may have come from a set-play but the set-plays were coming about because they were on the attack more and more.

The sub came far too late and we should have taken Coutinho off (for Lucas) in the last 10 minutes too as he was clearly shattered and Sunderland kept getting at Flanagan down our left.

He's generally got our tactics right this season but he's been very slow to react when the opposition make a change that effects the game. Up against vastly more experienced managers in the Champions League that'll be a problem and he's going to have to accept our gun-ho approach won't always work. A simple change from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1/4-3-3 would've stopped them dead.

My concern with him has been that he finds a system and then sometimes thinks it can work for every opponent or situation. Playing like this is great when you've got space to attack in but Sunderland flooded their back line and there was no space to play in. We needed more width to our game and with only 1 fullback being able to provide that, we needed a different system - even if only a slight variation, playing Suarez off the right and Coutinho from the left.

wow can't believe how critical l'pool fans are. Rodgers is doing a sensational job. Similar to Chelsea with Mourinho and Fergie with united a "in rodgers we trust" attitude is required.

End of the day, we won, we got 3 points, we continue our good form with another victory and keep at the top end of the table. Happy days. Does not matter how we get there, just as long as we get there. This season has been a delight, never thought we would seriously be challenging, thought it was one of our transition seasons.

I said give Rodgers time and i'm sure he will come good, didn't think it would only take 1 season for him to mount a title challenge. Wasn't even sure if Liverpool would mount a title challenge at all under him.

Football moves on very fast and it's a surprise to see United drop off so fast and weird in a way that i have never seen United finish lower than 3rd ever.

Same **** different manager. Everyone loves to fall on the "oh but you're winning" BS as if suddenly a manager has become infallible.

You can always improve your game, until you become the best, then it's about adapting to maintain.

Rodgers is doing fantastic, but he's got a lot of learning still to go.

Tonight was one of the cases when a change to adapt was required, he didn't, and it got edgy, and when it gets edgy, the team feels it, the fans feel it, and the pressure rises, everything starts compounding and suddenly you lose a goal, then it's uh oh, we need to be careful, and the pressure compounds more as you become defensive and afraid, and the next thing you know you're pinned to the 18 yard box for the last ten minutes and it becomes a mess, and your talents mean so much less.

It's about control. Rodgers lost it the last 30 because he failed to react to the game. It could have easily cost them three points.

Just because the team's doing well and Rodger's on the whole is doing a good job, it doesn't mean he's not made a mistake.

He's getting better and learning every week but at times he can be slow to change things tactically.
