Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [22 - 26th December 2012]

So someone could stand directly in front of the keeper from any free kick / at any point in time during the game and as long as they don't touch it it's not offside? Ridiculous.

I remember at the start of last season when Arsenal scored an og against us in similar circumstances and one of the ex-refs said that by the letter of the law, the player is only interfering with play once he touches the ball (unless he's blocking the keepers sight) and the correct decision was to award the goal.

That wasn't Nasri was it? Maybe thats the one I'm thinking of, I was thinking it might have been Nasri so was thinking us vs City, but may have been just before the transfer.

No, it was some young cb. He intercepted a ball going to Suarez (who was offside) and hit it straight against Ramsey and it went in.

Evans doing his best to one man band this game. 2 goals and a yellow in the first half alone.

I think officially it probably shouldn't have been given but it was ref's + new rules + ref's all being seemingly a little retarded. I'm sure others in a similar situation have been disallowed.

The difficulty comes from, I don't like seeing say a freekick to the far post get knocked in but a fairly irrelevant near post offside that effected nothing gets a goal disallowed, but they need to sort out the "interfering with play" decision.

If you clear the ball because it would otherwise go to someone offside... that is interfering with play, easily, but refs and the rules see that otherwise.

Dominated at home by a **** Newcastle side, this is a new low.

This isn't even in the top 10 of the last few years. We are Manchester United and our biggest strength (and biggest weakness) is that we win when we shouldn't. We don't need to play well to win so we simply haven't had a good vein of form in years.

2-1 now. Still very unhappy I couldn't go...so I made up for it by booking my train tickets for Crewe away... in February! :D

Totally missed that Colchester had a red card, like the look of their chances, cold, probably wet 10 men from early on and chasing the game they should tire early you would hope.

I can't believe there is a chance we can go top with the game in hand and a 6 point game potentially to 3rd place. Sheffield play Doncaster on new years day as well so hopefully a draw and both drop points.

Not watching the game, is fergie's shocking team selection partly to blame? Scholes, giggs and Carrick can't play in the same midfield.

Gigg's can't play full stop, any player will have a good game now and then and giggs wasn't terrible against Swansea, or more accurately, how crap half the team was made Gigg's look better than normal. But ultimately he's been completely useless in 9/10 performances in the past couple years, mental to start him and mental to start those three against a pretty mobile midfield.

If Cisse were in any kind of form and Newcastle were close to their best, it would be embarrassing, painfully embarrassing, Newcastle being how crap they are at the moment leaves Utd with every chance of winning this game even if they aren't playing well.
