Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th January - 2nd February 2017]

Well that's top four well and truly gone, we're now going to have to win the Europe League to get a CL spot. I don't understand why United have such a lack of intensity for 60 minutes and then decide they need to do something in the final 30. What's also worrying is how much has been spent in the last 4 years and how off the pace we still look. Realistically we need to buy a left back, a right back, a good dm, and a no.10 with a bit of magic to unlock stubborn defences.

We definitely need a right back, Valencia is just utter crap. Left back we just need to start playing Shaw, he's leagues ahead of everyone else we have. Right now I can never tell if players are injured or Mourinho has just decided he doesn't like them that week (notice how Darmian vanished and suddenly Blind who has barely played for months started?) We need another option for Carrick. He wasn't bad today but in the games where he's not working we have no other option.

Yeah agreed, it's bizarre how Mourinho seems to randomly decide he no longer likes a player. The thing I find most frustrating about Valencia is that he has absolutely no left foot and every team knows that, so they just show him inside because all he does is pass it square. Then even when he does cross it's often poor.

I think Mourinho needs to get over himself, put Martial back in the team and play him along with another couple of pacey players. The lack of pace in our side is very worrying, and that's something that has been an issue for five or six years now.

simple then - its Lindelof, Griezmann, Verratti and Fabinho :)

That must be at least £220m worth of players if Utd can get them of course

(oh plus the 2nd forward JM wants in the summer)

We have ~ 40m in the piggybank from recent sales add a few million for the imminent departure of rooney

Of course that all depends on getting CL next season which isnt exactly likely the way we have been playing recently - Im not even sure we could beat Southampton with our current form....

so the above list will end up being Fonte, Mahrez, Gibson, Coleman for absolutely stupid money

Still can not understand why he keeps dropping Martial. If he leaves it will be almost as bad as when we lost CR. Martial definitely has that world class aura about him. He just needs to sort out his private life. (Which mourinho should be doing). Rashford needs to be dropped as well. He has done little this season. Okay he is still young but I also remember a young michael owen who at the same stage was eating up the defence for breakfast.

Also please please please sell wayne rooney to China :(.

Brings up an interesting question - which Im not sure can actually be answered factually.....

Would an 18 year old Michael Owen playing today be anywhere as good as he was 20 years ago?

Ie surely EPL defences (and g/k's) have got hugely better, but also tactics / formations have changed considerably.

that's like saying Best would have been rubbish playing todays game, these players would have adapted. Owen was a pretty awesome striker tbf to him

Of course they would have, I didnt suggest otherwise.

Its not a black or white question, its a question of degree or whether the stats would be as remarkable as they were 20 years ago if he played today.

Yeah Owen in his prime still would have been very dangerous. I think we remember players in their latter years too much and forget the highs, particularly English players. Sky Sports showed some of the goals Rooney scored in his earlier years at United and I have to admit that I'd forgotten what a brilliant footballer he's been. He's just let himself go a bit in terms of lifestyle and fitness and had a few nasty ankle and foot injuries that have taken away his pace.
