Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th - 31st August 2014]

He's a half decent player when not in the box.

No, he's ONLY good in the 6 yard box, utterly worthless elsewhere. Kicking the ball past a player, running to it before anyone else then backheeling it out for a goal kick isn't a worthwhile skill. Anyone, literally anyone can run down the wing, it's what you do when you get there. Sanchez can run down the wing with the ball but won't do anything sensible with it when he gets there.

Running the ball down the wing is the easy part, the doing something useful with it, or wasting it, is the difference between a great/effective player, and a complete and utter waste of space. Welbeck's decision making, final ball, crossing, passing, woeful.

If you want a willing runner to go direct like DM said he'd like to see ozil and Sanchez doing then welbeck can play this style.

As above, I want someone who can drive the team forwards, a key part of that is after the driving, doing something with the ball, something he's not actually good at.

I don't want a "willing runner", I want to buy someone with genuine quality for a position we need and to offer something we don't already have. We already have people who can run to the corner then fall on the ball.

Should have failcowed it instead of reffing a charity match then Wenger.

My arsenal fan mate won't even text ke back once he realised i wasn't joking about tge welbeck transfer lol.

lol, my dad e-mailed me to say congratulations on signing Welbeck.... he was being ultra sarcastic and knew I'd hate it. :(

There isn't any upside to it, even if he managed to sign an injured player again, we didn't just get him on a loan, we paid 16 freaking million for a pile of turd.

Did you read the thing where Wenger has apparently said we were looking at him before Giroud's injury as a replacement for Podolski to play wide. Wide where firstly we paid 30mil for Sanchez, where we have Walcott(who tends to get started above much better players as Wenger loves the little runt) and where we are switching between Cazorla and Ozil because Cazorla is SO **** on the wing we shouldn't play him there... but do anyway.

So 16mil to apparently replace Podolski, as a player Wenger seems to go out of his way not to use? Rather than attempting to spend 16mil on a better striker as ours suck he was planning to buy a useless winger in Welbeck to replace a great player in Podolski... that he benches all the time anyway?

Anyone that thinks he hasn't lost his mind is just stupid at this point.

How much did Utd spend this transfer window in the end then, 160mil.... Arsenal have spent 230mil on players in the past well 3 years(4 summers).... we failed to a get a single player of the quality of Falcao or Di Maria, we bought no players like Shaw, ie potential to be the best in the world, already good and stupid young with donkeys years ahead of them(and english), we don't have a DM of the quality of Blind.

Sanchez, Welbeck, Ozil, Giroud, Cazorla, Monreal, Santos, Arteta, Gervinho cost about £150mil...... with that lot we have no big game players at all, no striker, no left back and no real quality in defensive midfield. We could have bought what Utd did replacing that lot, then had £70mil to buy Flamini for free, Mert, Campbell, Jenkinson and Cazorla cost between them a massive £30mil, so still 40mil, could have got Ozil(though shouldn't have). Podolski for 10mil, Chambers 16mil...

£230mil woefully spent, there are loads of top notch players, and as I was saying in another thread. Long term managers have that buy Ronaldo at 18 and see him come good 4 years later potential. Arsenal being the only team with a long term manager have bought incredibly poorly in terms of cheap players we make the most of later on. we released 27 players beginning of last season that were a mix of terrible buys, wasted talent(by Wenger) and youngsters who either our youth system failed or our scouts simply picked very poorly.

Wenger has been there for long enough that the youth system is entirely down to him, controlling every aspect and we got Cole first, then Wilshere.......

Even just spending what we have in the past 4 years we could have a truly epic team, but we spent it sooo poorly. Seriously I picked out every single issue Ozil had because they were obvious at Real, every single issue he had last year. I'm not magic, I just watched the games, no one else wanted to spend 42mil on him, it was a laughable fee and Real must have still been crying with laughter this summer over it. Had we not bought him we could have gotten Fabregas for less this summer. The buys Utd made this year + Fabregas = epic team and we've spent more than that and got nothing.

EDIT:- okay, the 160mil keeps sounding so odd with Falcao in there, but he'll cost them another £40+mil next season, so what, Arsenal could still afford that, as we'll have more money to spend next year also. With the money spent AND all the massive advantages you should have being in charge for over 5 years, IE buying a bunch of promising youngsters and actually having them become brilliant and useful rather than overspending on the likes of Ox, gervinho and Giroud, Arsenal have a distinct lack of top drawer players, and we have like in the past, saddled ourselves with expensive flops who won't be able to be sold. No one, I mean no one will offer Ozil 200k a week to underperform at another club, we're stuck with him till his contract is done, Gibbs new contract despite his inability to play football, 5 years of Welbeck on possibly 100k a week(I haven't seen a wage mentioned but he was on 85k a week so I think maybe more considering the fee. It's a joke how you can spend 230mil and get so many buys wrong.

Probably could have got Falcao if you'd gone in for him earlier. Based on comments from his dad, you only came in for at the last minute when the United deal was well under way.

DM, serious question and I'm certainly not taking the mick, but do you actually like supporting Arsenal? Do you get any sense of enjoyment out of it at all?

I imagine it must be massively frustrating when despite having utterly useless and terribad players, disgustingly awful man management and tactical knowledge and pathetic and nonsensical financial dealings, that somehow they keep getting absurdly and ridiculous lucky by consistently coming up against teams playing badly, having injuries or bad luck to allow Arsenal to fluke their way into the top 4 and Champions League for 15 seasons in a row, on top of which they have been completely undeservedly fortuitous enough to have teams overpay massively for their players to allow them to do so while have a ridiculously low net transfer spend.

All the above has unforgivably conspired to make Wenger look like a decent manager - hence the outpourings of hair-tearing grief, anguish and disbelief we get subjected to on a weekly basis due to the fact the club hasn't fired Wenger to allow him to take his rightful place in the Conference Premier where he belongs.

There's no more transfers or rumours & it was just rambling about Man.U.
There's no point having 2 threads for it.

To be fair, 90% of that entire thread was "rambling about Man U". Hell, there was even a running Man U commentary in the thread title :p

lol,

I think what would be considered the first team is now very strong with some exceptional players, but fitness is the weak point, Jones/Smalling/Rafael would fit in great at Arsenal with how often they are out injured.

outside of a Newcastle style basically naming unchanged team almost every game of the season I can't see them even coming close to a title push though the lack of europe would give them a small chance.... I just can't see Jones, Smalling, Rafael being fit enough throughout the season and the midfield having enough games in them to avoid having to play Valencia, Young, Carrick at various times to fill the holes.

Another two transfer windows, not along the same lines but with the same cut throat mentality of bringing in the right players and getting rid of the wrong ones and Utd could have a pretty fearsome squad. Another available every game CB or RB, a replacement for Carrick, a replacement for Valencia, these could be cheaper guys, rotation/back up but makes all the difference, in keeping the first team fit and not dropping down to Valencia level quality when you do have an injury.
