I was thinking it would be a nice touch to learn how to say hello and goodbye in the various different languages of the pilots I speak to on a daily basis. So, in the following languages, how does one say hello, goodbye and good day etc.? You'll have to spell them phonetically too as I suck at foreign language pronunciation.

  • German
  • Danish
  • Swedish
  • Norwegian
  • Finnish
  • Russian
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Indian
  • Korean
  • Polish
  • Dutch
  • Icelandic
  • Austrian
  • Swiss

Ta :)

"Awite mate?... I said awite mate?... AWITE?!"

That's all you need for international conversation

I don't believe you. :)

You should be able to get the majority of them here dude:

BBC - Languages. There are sound-bytes of how to pronounce them too!

To get you started, Danish:

Hello: Goddag.

Goodbye: Farvel.

Thank you: Tak (I love that, being so polite is so short in Danish :)).

Any more than that you could say "Undskyld, jeg kan ikke tale dansk =
I'm sorry, I don't speak Danish". :p

Thanks, that BBC site is great. Thanks for the replies everyone, I've been trying to learn some of them (not iCraigs :p).

I don't very often speak to French, Greeks, Spaniards as they generally fly in the airspace to the south of Heathrow whereas I work the north sector.
