Greeting and goodbyes in different languages

I reckon you should learn other funny phrases in said languages rather than the normal/boring hello good bye etc etc

I notice you have German and Austrian on your list. Don't they speak German in Austria?

chinese is nee-how for hello/greetings (I think that's right)

Tis spelt Ni hao. :)

Tis amazing what you learn from gold farmers. :o

* Chinese - Harro
* Japanese - Harro
* Korean - Harro

lol. Too much Team America for you.

After doing a year of Spanish you'd think I'd remember some of it, can't remember much French either after doing many more years of that.
Perhaps I'll bother to remember Spanish when they bother to send my damn certificate to me. :(

tschus(umlaut over u) is slang. its Auf Wiedersehen.

:)

also, hello = hallo.

guten tag is good day. :)

They all say it over here though (tschus) rather than Auf Wiedersehen... It's only very formal things where they say the latter - even then in restaurants, bars and shops they all say tschus, maybe that's just the northern germans ;). Though I would agree that speaking to a pilot, being formal may well be better.

My german is poor though - I never studied it, so I'm just picking up as I go along - but it;s a horrid language to learn! Well it is for a frenchman, I can understand why the english find it easier than french though.

I'll stick to my other languages :p

  • Finnish - hello - moi (pronouced mooey) or hei, goodbye = Näkemiin

Just to add to this moi is a rather more casual greeting than hei so it is better said to friends and delightfully for the simpletons like me you can say goodbye by repeating either of them e.g. moi moi or hei hei. Terve is another way to say hi, again possibly a bit casual and I would imagine taken from tervetuloa(welcome).

Norwegian;

Hello = Hei
How are you? = Hvordan er du?
I am well = Jeg er bra
Thanks = Tak
Yes = Ja
No = Nei

Some of the spelling of that might be off as I havent spoken it for over 12years, but that should be roughly correct.

To complete the Chinese (mandarin) :)

Ni hao - hello
Zai jian - Goodbye
Ni hao ma? - How are you?
Wo hen hao - I'm very good (wor hun hao)
Ni ne? - And you? (nee na)
Xiexie - Thank you (sheyshe)

Accents would help, but that should get you far enough before they start thinking you know any more :p Should really set about sorting out some chinese input on my PC..
