What strikes me is if they misjudged the rate at which they are descending, they would smack into the ground. Or a sudden gust of wind could push them off course into a tree.

Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing feat, but to the point of being suicidal.

Couldn't agree more with that, the margins for error tiny compared to just doing a skydive!

It's not quite as dangerous as that. If the person gets too close to the ground, the wingsuit will form a kind of cushion of air between him and the ground which will push him away from it.

But obviously that's not going to stop you going splat if you get it completely wrong, but it gives them a certain margin for error.
