Grounding yourself in a room with a carpet floor

Will touching the metal on my FREDRIK desk every now and again do the job?

I heard the case-touching doesn't work properly if it's painted (CM 690 II Advanced has black, i assume painted interior).

Stick a nail in the earth terminal of your PC mains lead, plug it in to the mains and lick it to ground yourself.

If you actually try this then you are totally mental.

Really don't try it.

Touch something bare metal that is connected to the earth ring of your mains wiring eg. a radiator **** or pipe. Any bare part of your PC case will also be fine, provided it's plugged into the mains.

Although unless you spend 25 minutes grinding your feet into the carpet while wearing PVC clothing you are unlikely to create much of a charge.

You can ground yiourself on your PSU. Just leave it plugged in, but turned off (via the switch on the back).

Can anyone verify this? Even when working on carpet?

Touching the powersupply with the "O" down, plugged into the wall and switched off there and then touching the PSU every now and again will successfully ground myself?

I built my whole PC over and over again on carpet whilst touching the radiator every now and again, never a problem, just handle the componants correctly.

Also if you leave the PSU plugged in but the switch at the back switched off the case will be earthed but triple check its switched off at the PSU and the wall

I wouldn't really worry about it. Like Tealc said (not in so many word) your not really going to generate much static unless you put on rubber shoes and moonwalk for 15 minutes.

Most cases on electrical items are grounded. Just touch anything that’s plugged into the main and is metal

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't wearing rubber shoes be a good thing?

Surely it'd be better than doing it with socks on? Maybe i should build my computer barefooted?

My Dad might have an anti-static strap somewhere, if he does it's just a case of power supply off but plugged in, which the wall switch off aswell? Thing is i'm not sure the 690 II actually has a part of the casing that isn't painted (black interior).

Scratch some paint of to reveal the bare metel. Keep tocuhing this and you'll be fine. ;)

JOKE!!! Don't Scratch any paint off

I've built whole machines by just touching the metal part of the case before touching any components.

If you move around on the carpet in between doing things to you rig just remember to touch the case again. Even still I really doubt you will generate enough static to kill anything in your machine

Some people claim that damage can be reduced by wearing little or no clothing, it is said that the less cloth that is in contact with your body, the less static is produced, though these claims remain unproven.

LMAO.

I have spent over 20 years upgrading and building PC's and I have only ever used the radiator and PSU methods of earthing myself. I have never lost a single component to static :). My usual mistake is forgetting to turn on the mains socket before hitting the system power for the first time :D.
