Grounding yourself in a room with a carpet floor

Always makes me giggle. A quick risk assement. Not doing anti static and you blow a part of your PC you are building. Or strap yourself to you mains earth point via a wrist strap or holding onto some thing connected to your mains earth point.

Chances of blowing a PC part. reading through the post in this thread and doing some basics, id say it is very very unlikely this would happen.

The chances of some thing electrical shorting in your house while being plugged into the earth point at the same time thus reciving the "SHOCK" as your RCD breakers sends the excces charge to earth and down your arm also very unlikely to happen.

Either way I know what I`d rather do....................

Modern computer components are far more resistant to static charges than the stuff made 10 year ago, so this is really a non-issue these days. But the PSU/Case while plugged in but switched off or Radiator suggestions are fine if you really want to.

I have spent over 20 years upgrading and building PC's and I have only ever used the radiator and PSU methods of earthing myself. I have never lost a single component to static :). My usual mistake is forgetting to turn on the mains socket before hitting the system power for the first time :D.

I have done that SO many times, I have only been building for a year or two and I so it every time and it scares me every time!

I've known people who've worked with hardware for years and have not (or barely) payed any attention to static electricity, and nothing has ever been damaged by it. I think it's blown completely out of proportion to be honest, if you're really worried about it then plug the PSU in and turn both it and the switch off, that will work.

Worked on various pc's amd might ground myself on a rad pipe or psu casing if I can remember!

if its really bothering you then put some cardboard on the floor where you will be working to insulate yourself from the carpet :)

Easiest thing to do get a length of unwated wire/cable strip both ends by inch or two and cellotape it to radiator pipe then attach other end to yourself. Job jobbed and money saved
