Grounding yourself.

Unashamed Bump!

I love it when folks start chatting learning about static. I could do with reading up on it a bit more. For anyone who wants to learn about static, re here's some useful info. http://samplecode.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/sb/8000-sb001_-en-p.pdf

Truthfully even though I tend to try and convince others to observe static precautions, I'm surprised I myself haven't caused more damage via static than I a seem to have done in the past. Killed One motherboard at least, when I was too lazy to wear a strap. Lucky it was an old mobo.

Between these instances of touching the case or a radiator (if you don't have a anti static strap) make sure that if you walk around on the carpet, or remover a jumper, that you ground yourself again.

Anti static is a mega important precaution. I once seen with my owb eyes British Telecom declare an entire 140000 line telephone exchange unfit for purpose because an engineer installed a line card without anti static precautions - which was a multi million pound disaster for the German multinational installing it.

I recently bought a wrist str, but have no idea what to connect it to. My case is painted and there are no radiators in my house

What do?

Plug psu in to wall socket. DO NOT switch the wall socket on. The psu is earthed. Attach the wrist strap to the case. There must be some unpainted part of the case, surely?

I like to ground myself by laying on my shag pile carpet, wearing a thick woolly jumper and rubbing balloons over myself at the same time. Works a treat!

"Ground", not "Grind"! That's a different forum you've got mixed up with. :)

Edit: Any chance of a link to the other forum, then? ;)

I've personally never bothered with a anti static band, just make sure I am not wearing synthetic fibers, plus usually rubbing your hands on a case (with psu plugged in) is enough earth any static.

But if you really need something to attach it too, replace 1 of the screws holding the psu in the case with an unpainted screw and connect to that, then plug the psu in (like has been noted above, you don't have to have the plug socket switched on to make an earth connection).
