and 1 80gb western digital hardrive

both running through IDE.

and a wireless card.

i have had this problem for a little while, the computer runs well in windows but its slow to start.

Slower than a 1.8ghz amd athlon with 512mb ram :S

Might be worth trying bootvis (from MS, google it) as some people have reported gains after running that and tweaking.

Could it be something to do with your wireless network? My XP installation is about 1 year old and the bar tracks across the boot screen once...

i dont think it is the wireless adapter as it was slow before i had it installed.

and it has been reinstalled in the past 2 weeks.

will try that program and see if it helps.

In Windows disable any ports you aren't using such as COM ports etc. This'll help reduce the boot-up time.

Also disable any services you don't use/need in Windows.

Check out your BIOS and see if you can tweak some settings in there to speed up the whole process. For example, if you have a floppy drive consider disabling it. I have one in mine, just in case. I hardly use it and so I disable it in the BIOS until I need it; then I can just re-enable it.

I also put my hdd as the first and only boot device so my PC isn't looking for CDs/DVDs in my optical drives.

Check out http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17180569 for useful tips on improving boot times.

If you're up to it, consider downloading nLite and using that on your copy of XP. You can remove features and stuff from Windows that you don't need. This means a smaller install of XP and so a quicker boot time and Windows has less DLLs/services/files to load on boot up.
