Hey guys, for ages I've been dual booting XP/Ubuntu on my MSI Wind, all was fine.

Anyway, I went home for the Easter break and obviously had to take a lot of entertainment with me to distract me from family boredom so I quickly formatted the Linux partition to give me some space to store tv/movies.

So now I'm presented with Error 17. I know its because the partition table is completely fubar now, but I assumed I would just be able to reformat the lot and start again (which I was planning on doing soon anyway). However, I cannot even boot into a Windows installation disk!
About to try a linux live distro but not feeling confident!

Any help guys? To make things more interesting, Its a netbook with no CD/DVD so all solutions have to work from USB sticks, and I've only the one which is 1gb in size.

Help!?

You'll need to boot in ubuntu using a live cd and edit grub, so it know that the windows partition is there. I've got a link to a decent tutorial, it's was easy enough.

I just need to boot back into ubuntu to get it, give me five mins :)

I doubt it! Partition table should be fine, if all you did was format!

Do you want to recover anything on that disk? Or are you just going to wipe it all?

There are some tutorials for getting the Ubuntu Live CD onto a bootable stick. I've got an .iso booting from hard disk, so shouldn't be too difficult.

if you've formatted your linux partition, then what you've done is get rid of the files in /boot that grub reads to show you the boot menu and allow you to choose your os, reinstalling linux will reinstall grub so the error will go away, alternatively you need to use fixmbr in windows to reset the master boot record where a portion of grub lives but that will only boot windows then
