GS60 2pe or P35w V2

Kevpuk, that would probably mean I would need a new bag too. Currently just use my clan shoulder bag, and my samsung r580 just fits into it. Technically I need a new bag (over both shoulders) anyway so its not a biggy, but thanks for the heads up

MY REPLY : :D

OK so lets not get drawn into too much of a tit-for tat battle with our "friends" at MSI, but if the feedback from them is "THE MSI HAS THE BEST KB!!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!" then I feel this isn't particularly insightful, just rep banging the drum.
(SO....I cannot comment on the KB without you getting offended?)

The P35 keyboard is solid, nice travel and feedback and in our opinion more classy and subtle in design as it is one colour backlit rather than multi colour fairy light appearance. You wont need to switch it off for meeting or business use to disguise the gaming performance.
(Very nice feature - well done, pretty sure you can make the MSI KB any color you fancy as a single backlight...so your argument is pretty dead.)

Fans are quiet, its the machine I use and I am convinced from feedback I have seen from customers and re-seller partners including OCUK that the Gigabyte is the machine that runs more silently.
(Bravo)

The BIG advantage of the Gigabyte is the fact that we have Optical drive in such a thin chassis, something MSI have yet to achieve.
(Awesome if you still use DVDs - maybe people do...great feature from GBT!)

If the optical drive isn't required for your usage, then this can be removed and you have the option to install another SSD or HDD, or simply replace the drive with the bracket we supply FOC and save a bit of weight.
(Sounds fantastic)

From an upgrade perspective, access to ram slots is very simple, a couple of screws on the base of the unit, and there is no Warranty Void sticker (unlike all MSI units).
(MSI warranty is not voided if you install the memory correctly...)

Both ram slots and SSD bays are on the underside of the unit, easily accessible, unlike the MSI Stealth units where they are behind the motherboard, oh dear.
(OMG OMG OH DEAR...)

SSD brand on the P35 is LiteOn.
(Brilliant)

Happy gaming which ever unit you purchase! I am sure you will be happy with both...but remember...if your buy the MSI...you will have fairy lights. #truestory

Play nice Arjibear :P
The noise is an important issue to me, and i do occasionally have people issue drawings on DVD, which I always moan about and say just ftp them to me or something.

And the hassle of upgrading/replacing the RAM/SSD's in the MSI is a problem. I assume its due to the cooling set up, but if it was an arbitrary decision, then its a stupid one from a customer point of view.

I tend to prefer to buy a laptop with the minimum spec + gpu and cpu I want, then buy the SSD/HDD, RAM, and windows myself, and install it all. Since it saves money, but with the amount of time it would take me to do it on the MSI, I have to buy it full spec, since my time is worth more than the money saved. Which annoys me as I know I am paying more than I have to for parts :(

But it is nice to know the warranty isn't voided - assume there is an offical guide somewhere, if i buy it.

The LiteOn model SSD's certainly don't seem to be the best, but at 520/320 and high iops, im sure they are fast enough - would obviously prefer EVO's or intels though.
Whats in the MSI? is the 1TB drive 7200?

Arjibear,
There isn't a gs60 model with the 870m, 16gb ram 1080p display and only 1 ssd or similar in order to keep the price down below £1400? Can only spot the 16gb ram with 870 on the 3k display model which is too expensive

GS70 2PE
Can you also comment on this, the thermal issues/throttling they experienced: http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GS70-2PEi71611-Notebook-Review.119833.0.html

Was this likely due to some issue with their unit, has it been fixed if it was an issue with all units? If you look at the FPS graphs at the bottom, the gs70 falls behind other similar specced latops quite a lot due to throttling. Yet, if you look at the gs60 2pe review, they only notice throttling during max load on both cpu and gpu, and during gaming the fps is in line with other laptops.

*In mortal kombat voice* - Arjibear WIIIIIINS!!

Also, i bought an external DVD writer with the MSI. its still in the box. never been used! Games all come via steam/origin/etc now days. Even crystal reports, SAP and adobe all use downloads of DVD now!

but with that said, it is a good feature. however it does make the battery a tad smaller. 48WH to 57Wh or something?

I always play nice :)

I was just responding to an attack from my friend at GBT! I thought i replied very respectfully in all honestly

Cooling is huge. Under loads the GT70 has it's advantages of the Cooler Boost 2 technology which has more/wider heat pipes than most other notebooks.
Yes it's loud if on full...but I am sure that other NB's are either loud too or running very hot when under heavy load. If using for normal games or internet, it's as quiet as a mouse.

The GT60/70 has 4 memory slots. 2 under the KB which are the ones the factory install memory too, and 2 easily accessible under the back cover. The only time the warranty is void is if you destroy things when taking the back cover on and off. I am sure you wont but that will affect the warranty if you did so.

3 SSD's are available to install on the GT range.

I will find out the models of the HD used and post here shortly :)

I've got the older version of the GS70 and I love it, but the 2 points above about the access to memory are quite important as to access the memory slots on your machine I have to take out 12 screws IIRC and then strip the motherboard out of the case to turn it over to access the slots which is not something I'm prepared to do and therefore was a it of a let down considering every other laptop I've owned they've been right there once I've taken the back panel off.

I mentioned the GS70 2PE, not the GT, the GT is too heavy for me to lug around anywhere :(
Under full load, I don't care about noise, within reason. Or heat that much tbh, its just throttling which I don't like. No point in shedding out the money for high end parts, only for them to be throttled so much (or not turboing) that they perform like much cheaper parts whenever they are loaded.

The GS60 is the model I would probably prefer due to lower weight, but the GS70 2PE 258UK has the spec I want, since it has 16GB of ram instead of SSD Raid for very similar money as the GS60 2PE 060UK. But I ruled it out after reading the above posted review stating the 870m gets throttled to much lower performance when both the cpu and gpu are loaded, and this happens during gaming.

Chemical,

The question you should be asking these reps is how hot does each laptop get when under full load.

And where are you based? London? If so, I can show you my P35W

I have the N14 GS70 too - Great machine. I understand sometimes the way they are designed seem a little frustrating...but they are designed that way for a purpose I suppose. :(

You play League?

ARJiBEAR

Adeel2788, I am London based, but current contract means I am out at three bridges (past gatwick) so hours are stupid long. Im in archway, so North, where abouts are you?

Arjibear, I don't play League, and all my mates play Dota 2, so if I was to pick up a moba, it would be that.

That is far :D. I live in south west London near tooting but I travel to the city for work near liverpool street station

oh well :( I will be buying by the absolute latest of this weekend, but most likely tonight/tomorrow night, so wont have an opportunity. But thanks for the offer :D

Im going to go with the MSI GS60 2PE-060UK, which has seemingly dropped in price a little overnight :D

This is mainly because of the weight, a Mg-Li frame - as opposed to semi plastic construction, and I want my laptop to look flash, rather than more business.

Will be ordering it tonight when I have access to the business card, barring anyone giving me a good reason not to.

Arjibear, Can you link me to an official statement, and guide/service manual to upgrade the memory without voiding warranty please?
