Sergey Grigorovich, the head of GSC Game World has confirmed that their upcoming game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will require an internet connection to play:
“Protection from piracy? Part of the content will be located on the server and downloaded as the game progresses. Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection. Software piracy is an issue for us, we try to fight it, but within reason.

If people can not afford a licensed version, it is to our advantage if they download a pirated copy, and then want to buy a license. In Ukraine, there are different products that people love so much that they buy a license in principle. We want to create just such a product.”

Might stop 0day piracy but that's about it

DRM is like the so called 'Golden Generation' of England players, they keep getting used and never ****ing do anything that they're supposed to!

I don't see why not, a similar system to this has worked so well for UbiSoft.

Oh, wait.

As much as I love the Stalker games I will not be supporting any game requiring an always on connection.

Another single-player (I assume) game that requires a constant connection.

Also it streams parts of the game as it goes? Awesome for us with **** connections or really low bandwidth limits.

YAY.

Well as an avid fan of the stalker series (who interestingly discovered it though piracy) and owns the collectors editions of them all and has encouraged others to buy them...I won't be buying this.

Shame really, but i'm guessing as they're now going for this DRM + consoles it's going to be a dumbed down shooter and not what stalker used to be.

Until Ubi servers go down (which has happened, hasn't it?) on a Friday afternoon and are not up again til Monday

im sure I can live without it for a weekend if it happens, bit like when my PSU blew and i had to wait for a new one, or if my internet goes down and i cant play an online game.

if i can possibly do it maybe you can too?

hopefully others wont use this method of people supporting their families (DRM) as an excuse to justify stealing it via piracy (not aim at anyone on this forum)

sure it wont be classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , a bit like Fallout3 wasnt proper fallout but hey it was fun.

I've got all three Stalker games, I've only finished the first one. They all ran poorly on good PCs. I think I'll give this a miss. Too many other games anyway.

It's more principle than anything. You buy a product - is it unreasonable to be able to use the product as you see fit? Where does it end? (I know the answer to that btw ;))

I think gaming developers should allow us to try the games before we buy them, the use of Demos was so popular in the Playstation days, why did it stop? Most people who use torrents to play games only do so to try them first and see if they like them, more often then not I've spent £40+ on a game which was incredibly trash, bugged, underdeveloped, lacked content and I couldn't play it for more then an hour.

It seems that developers want everything for nothing, you don't go to a clothing store, close your eyes and randomly pick a bunch of clothes, if you don't like a meal at a restaurant then you have the right to complain, I don't see why video games should be any different when they are getting more and more expensive and are a billion dollar industry.

I'm not entirely sure I believe that, but it would be nice to see demos come back.

What I can't understand is the mentality of harsh DRM. Devs seem to keen to use harsh measures which irritate and inconvenience legitimate buyers purely on the chance it'll stop or reduce piracy. They seem to be under the impression that DRM can do no harm and can't drive people away.

You play demo - realise it's pap and don't buy the product

Developer has to set aside an amount of time to create the demo - this cost money. These days developers release demos under the guise of "betas" despite the fact that the released build is already old so bug fixes can't/have already been fixed

It's better business to hype a product and have people buy it to find out it's an average remake of last years average sequel :D

Only until people learn that this is what they do, and then people become reluctant to give them money. ;)

+1

It's not good long term. I used to spend a fortune on video games every month but I stopped, I just can't justify spending £40-50 for a game like CoD, Battlefield, etc when it's literally always the same thing but with different maps and slightly different guns.
