Scenario:

I have a 2 x144hz monitors one with Gsync,one without and my game runs between 80 -100fps at all times.

Is there any benefit of using Gsync because there will be no tearing or Input lag if I don't use any *sync* (vsync = off)

Yes, Freesync and Gsync will 'smooth' out the drops in FPS, as you won't be able to maintain a constant 144fps in every game.

Once you are used to the smoothness, it's very noticeable going back to a non Freesync/Gsync monitor.
 
I've been using a 27" 2560 x1440 144Hz G-Sync Monitor ( Rog Swift TN Panel ) for my games and there is no way I could go back to a non Free/G-Sync Monitor no way .

Although I do run a 2nd 27" TN Monitor for everything non game related , and I have that set @100Hz having it set @60Hz makes it look awful

How does Gsync smooth the drop in fps if the monitor is 144hz vs a non gsyn monitor ?

I speak from experience on a 4k 60hz gsync - i do 'FEEL' the difference. I've recently bought a 144hz gsync monitor (rog swift) but i don't feel the difference the same i did when 40-60fps 60hz vs 80-100 144hz :eek:

is it because if the gpu renders at 87 fps, the monitor refreshes at 87hz?

Well I have to be honest with you , I cant tell you lol...but I noticed a big difference once I connected the swift ( got mine half price ) and went on BF4 and one or two other games , things looked so much more sharp and played much more smoothly ...and I'm getting around 135-140 and thats with 150 resolution scale and @2560 x1440, and even on titanfall 2 and BF1 it looks awesome( no idea what fps i get though )

Don't forget that free sync and gsync alters the monitors refresh rate to match that of your FPS. This decreases input lag because it ensures your monitor is always ready for the next frame.

So when you get FPS drops it can cause input lag because your monitor had to wait briefly for the next frame which tends to be seen as stutter. It is always better to have a version of *sync. Unless your in competitive FPS games.

If you are using the non Gsync monitor with vsync off and getting 80-100fps then there *will* be tearing.

Why? Does tearing occur when you are rendering less frames than the fixed refresh rate of the monitor ?

Also Gsync combined with vsync on will always ensure you are using Gsync, with gsync on and vsync off, depending on your framerate allows you to dip in and our of gsync - so what circumstances would you want gsync with vsync off?

Tearing occurs anytime there is no form of refresh sync in use. Of course how noticeable it is at given time may depend on a number of factors such as frame rate, current displayed scene, location of the tear itself and even the viewers perception of it.

There's more to it than that but pre gsync I put up with it as I really don't like the Vsync induced input lag and so had become used to it. A friend of mine recently moved to gsync and he was more wowed by the 60-144Hz move than the gsync itself so there you go :)

Personally I love the gsync effect which for me shines in games that run 70+ fps
