I might have to become a commuter so I'm considering what second car for the job. Doesn't need to be a big saloon and I live near lots of twisty mountain roads.

I like the look of the BRZ, but yet to take a test drive, is anyone using one for daily commuting?

Yup. Commute in mine every day, 25 miles each way, perhaps 80% of (usually very busy) motorway/dual carriageway. Obviously not as effortless as a big saloon, but by no means uncomfortable. Average about 34MPG.

Used to do 10mile twisty + 6 mile dual carriageway in mine each way and loved it, unfortunately I walk to work now and really miss the drive home after a long day.

as others have said its totally down to the roads, traffic and your personal preferences.

I did years of commuting 60 miles a day into London in an MX5 with a mix of fast motorway and crawling traffic. It wasn't the best car for it, but when the sun was out and the roads were clear it was great fun :)

20 miles up a free flowing motorway? Sure.

20 miles of urban slog through traffic? Awful.

This. My old commute of 15 miles in the S2000 was fine, until I hit traffic.
Insufferable.

What are they like long term with those sort of mileages, there should be plenty of them 3+ years old now so any problems should becoming well known?

.o?

There's been a few reports of certain warranty issues arising from some owners, I'd have a cast around on owners club forums if you want to know more. But none that I know of specifically related to age or mileage.

As with any car, it depends mainly on the usage profile and the care taken by the owner. Mine is just under three and a half years old now and 43K miles. But most of the mileage is from sitting on the motorway with just me in it, and I make sure to keep on top of servicing. No issues so far, I've had the car since nearly new (6 months old/350 miles).

I'd quickly read up on the warranty options. Toyota offered a 5 year/100K mile warranty, whilst I heard Subaru offered 3 year/60K. Not sure if this is definitely the case, but something to consider when looking at second hand options.

Thanks, I think I prefer a Subaru badge (and front end) to a Scion, but I do need to compare warranty etc. Time to trawl the club forums.

Biggest complaint I've read on the prior years was the Nav unit being terrible...
