GTA 4 RTX Remix Path Tracing

Do you have any interest in anything that isn't a proprietary nV technology at this point? (genuine question)
I love GTAIV, but it's mostly fine as-is (CPU perf not withstanding)

Edit: Water reflections at 7:55 don't look in any way realistic... ICE enhancer was better and would run fine on what would now be considered a root-vegetable!

Whilst the path tracing does look rather nice, are they running the 'original' on the lowest settings possible to exaggerate the comparison?
Surely GTA4 had shadows and better reflection maps before?

Can't recall exactly what gta 4 unmodded maxed looks like but I don't think DF have reduced settings in their comparison (at least nothing was mentioned in the video unless I missed it). I do recall the modded gta 4 looking far better though but alas, the modded version can't achieve what is shown here with path tracing.

Path/ray tracing isn't proprietary, every single gpu can use it. It will just run a lot worse on hardware that isn't tailored for such visuals. AMD/Intel gpus can also run these rtx remix mods too but there will be graphical artifacts and performance issues because amd/intel haven't optimised their drivers for this (rtx remix is open source so not a black box like older nvidia tech.)

But if we are talking about true proprietary tech. such as dlss, frame gen, gsync ultimate. Nvidia simply works better in my experience at such things, which is also evidenced. I don't care if it is proprietary or not or who it is by, I just want the best. The main one being gsync compatible/freesync premium, it simply sucks compared to a true gsync ultimate screen (got both the aw 32 and aw43 qd-oled monitors), once an oled 21.9 39" 5k 240+HZ monitor with gsync ultimate is out, I'll be switching asap. PS. nvidia aren't the only ones with proprietary tech now either, amd and fsr 4... ;)

Ah fair enough. I hadn't realised RTX remix worked on non nV cards, so thanks for that, might give portal remix a go some time!
Is the game itself any good guys? I have it on steam but never played :P
Yeah it's good, a bit more gritty and serious than other GTAs. I really enjoyed the story.
The standalone 'DLCs' (Episodes from Liberty city) are great too, with the Ballad of Gay Tony being back to more comedic and silly.

It had. The shadows were updated real time for the Sun and Moon, not just at every 2-4 frames or whatever other games do that looks stuttery. It could also render the individual wheel spokes of a bike and its brake/clutch handle. Also large objects weren't affected by the usual Screen Space limitation. But it had its limitation, too. Not all objects cast shadow, while you'll see Niko's shadow, you wont see it from the metal battlement, but you'll see some from a plastic chair. All in all, raster has its limits, can't compete with path tracing.

One of my favourite games ever.

I like the physics and driving, it may not be totally realistic but it’s fun and adds to the challenge and character.

I recommend looking at FusionFix as it is a mod that is easy to install on any platform and basically overhauls many elements of the game, especially graphically, to allow a lot more customisation as well as improvements in the visuals. Shadows and reflections included, which may be a big boost from vanilla, although I have to say the shadows and image are generally quite borked on GTA IV on PC in many ways. The mod helps with a lot of that but not all.

I think in some ways RT doesn’t really help as it loses some of the unique visual identity of the game not to mention performance. However I think in future titles designed that way it could be incredible given the scope of the series.

I would say in addition to FusionFix if we could just get the source code for the game the community would probably do 10x a better job doing it justice than any remaster. I would suspect the demand for a remaster also to be less than the original 3D trilogy of games so commercially it can’t be that bad… C’mon Rockstar…!

I think the world is too empty and the game is just too old to warrant the time on this. I wish they'd do this treatment to Company of heroes or something like that.

They definitely turned settings down for the comparison, GTAIV actually had some pretty impressive shadows, at least for it's time - Like if you put the headlights on full beam and drove around, you'd see things like cars and lamposts occluding the light.
Alex, I agree with what you say about visual identity - It's one thing I've always disliked about a lot of the visual mods, as well as RTX on some other games: Every car look like it's been freshly detailed and polished to an almost mirror finish, that maybe fine for i.e. a racing game, but makes no sense for a clapped out rusty jalopy in GTA

I noticed that too, the initial shots seem to lack any shadows at all and the texture detail is definitely low. I would like to see maxed out settings with FusionFix versus RT. I bet that in practice the modded original is more faithful and enjoyable in the end. I do love the tech showcase of RT though.

Shadows in GTA IV were technically interesting for the time but there were lots of issues at launch and even some introduced later in patches! The performance hit to get them looking any good is still not trivial for my current system on high settings (RX580) and the semi-transparent texture issues have always been a bit weird, such as fences etc. Like I said, if the community could fix a lot of the major issues at source, there is an amazing remaster in there. I’m surprised how many haven’t played it before.
