Ok, I know we have done threads like these before, but now that the vid has been out a few days I want to know your opinions on what the new title may contain. I'm not so much looking for a wish list as real conjecture as to where rockstar may be going with the series.

I think they could be going in one of two directions with GTA IV. They could be starting all over again and will do the entire series III,VC & SA again in lovely HD detail with shed loads more to do in each city. So IV will be Liberty City all over again with a massive increase in city size etc and then the next will be VC again and then SA again. Or they may well be bringing out a fantastically huge map with all three last gen cities on and more but in HD.

Whaddaya reccon?

Im going for either
a huge map proper city sized
or
all 3 states(lc/vc/sa)

story wise what do you thinks gonna be the plot? You think this is gonna be a rise to the top of crime ladder? Think we'll be playin as a vigilante or maybe a cop? I hope its one of the latter because it gives us a new twist and perspective to play from.

Also this Jean Reno look-alike seems like he wants out of the crime business. Selling and murdering people at least is a nono for him.

I personally don't think they can afford to just re-do the existing series. (Not that I think it's what they will be doing)

Games like Saints Row and Crackdown have already covered the "GTA in HD" niché. GTA IV needs to bring something new, something next gen to the table.

What that may be however, I'm not sure.

I'm hoping they do the five boroughs of NYC and remodel them as Liberty City. It doesn't matter that the original LC only had three islands. I'm not bothered about continuity in a game like this.

I think it may be something along the lines of Splinter Cell Double Agent where you may be stuck in the middle of the good guys and the bad guys and what you do during the game affects what types of missions you can undertake.

Sorry if that's crap but I am knackered tonight.

I'd like to see a huge city but lots of small 'episodes'. Each one should only last a few hours but all have completely different stories and and characters (including the player). They can crossover too. There should be a tonne of episodes on the disc but the story should be infinitely expandable with downloadable episodes.

Pure speculation follows:

In the trailer we see what we assume is 'Russian Blokey' (cool name eh?) going on about how in the past he killed/sold/traded people etc and hopes things will be different here.

A lot of thinking and bouncing random ideas off my dad I came to the only conclusion I could.

Do you remeber a mission in GTA:SA where Tenpenny tips you off about the Ballas and The Russians meeting at the docks? Eventually you kill the Russian dude there. Russians out of the GTA series you'd think?

Maybe 'Russian Blokey' is the boss of the guy you killed in that mission? After his dealings in Los Santos went wrong maybe he has come to Liberty City hoping to try again? By my reckoning this would place the game mid 1990's (post GTA:SA but pre GTA III)

My thoughts anyhoo :)

No I can't see that myself.

I don't think after all these years GTA will all of a sudden go soft and PC. It will be post 9/11 for a start and I expect to see some dark stuff possibly along the lines of government sponsered drug traffiking, terroism and conspiracys i.e. CIA double agents setting bombs off and stuff like that. GTA san andreas touched on it a bit but I think GTA4 will go a lot further.

Unfortunately I predict more of the same :(

Game companies are too afriad to try new things (Nintendo is exempt of course).

I'd disagree there. I'd say what most people want in video games is action and violence so that doesn't leave many avenues open, after all how many different ways is there to shoot a gun?

quite a few actually :P

Well time wise it looks modern day to me, there was a poster for 'America's next top hooker' (I think it said that) in the background, which would place it squarely in modern day.

I completely agree that they will probably remodel and expand the size of Liberty City though, after all the layout in GTAIII was completely different to the first GTA so why not use the fact that it's a completely new gen to change things to how they want it to be but were maybe limited with last gens hardware.

My thinking is that they will make a fantastically huge and very detailed map and then release episodic content and expantions throughout the life of the series.

My slight concern is that NYC is pretty flat, which suggests a lack of mountains and high ground to do crazy jumps off. So I am hoping that there are other cities/towns/countries even. :)
