GTA IV performance

The steam version of this game ran terribly for me, CTD after 2 mins no matter what I did & I tried many fixes. Bought the retail version in Tesco & it runs perfectly, just had to fiddle with display settings to optimise it.

I feel sorry for people having problems with GTA4 and then calling it a "bad port" lol.

I've had GTA4 retail version since a week after release and I've never had a single issue with it. Runs perfectly fine at max settings. Don't blame the game.

I got GTA IV in the steam sales the other day and have been playing it for a few hours. I knew the game was poorly optimised for the pc after reading comments.

On my system ([email protected], 4gb, GTX 460) it runs ok, fraps is reporting 40-50fps but it just doesn't feel it, slight stuttering and just not really smooth.

A bit random I know but whack your 955 up to 4.0Ghz. Built a PC for a mate a while back with this processor and managed to easily OC it to 4.0Ghz air with AMD's crappy stock cooler.

This game is an unoptimised mess, only used 1 of my 2 GPU's thought it was still playable maxed out.

You're being naive, not everyone has the same hardware setup as you and their interpretation of running 'perfectly fine' is most likely different. The game is so widely regarded as a poorly optimised console port amongst the PC community that you're in a tiny minority of people who claim it's perfect. I think it's a combination of hardware config and expectations. I think you may have been a bit lucky with your hardware and have lower expectations that a lot of people. I'd quite happily see a vid of it on max settings running at a constant, unstuttering 60 fps on your rig though. It'd be like a breath of fresh air!

runs fine at max settings for me, its the view distance that is the killer for most, guna mod it with the texture pack, just got a bad feeling it will be a bad move, steam wont allow it and ill have to re download all 15gb again. even at 1.5mb/sec it still takes th emess.

Don't think its a poor port as such as its probably the same thing the xbox runs. So its more a poor engine to start. Even the xbox version doesn't have AA and the shadows aren't proper drawn. Would have been nicer if they'd made the engine for PC from scratch. But with M$ getting exclusivity from the start hampered things. If LA noir comes out on PC or Red dead then we can see if the engine has any improvements.

Can't quite remember but is that maybe due to graphics memory. I recall GTA 4 being a pain with not loading roads sometimes.

Nothing to do with gfx card memory, i've turned everything down to minimum levels and it still wont draw the water...

Spec:
Phenom II X3 450 @3.6Ghz
ATI Radeon 4850 1024mb
4Gb Ram

Allright, not top of the line, but should be more than enough to play it...?

Xbox 360 settings
Resolution 1280 x 720 @ 20 -30 fps
Texture Quality Medium
Reflection Resolution Medium
Water Quality Medium
Shadow Quality High
Render Quality Low
View Distance 21
Detail Distance 10
Vehicle Density 33
Shadow Density does not exist on the Xbox 360

ok thats bad :p

it runs perfectly fine and always smooth for me with
1055t
4gb
460 1gb
@1920x1080 all ingame settings on there highest but 65 view distance

but i would still say its a bad port the hardware it requires is insane its definetly not optimised very well

I don't often agree with Asim, but he's spot on with this.

I've never had a problem and it's always ran fine for me.

Well, i finally found out the problem for the no water issue and generally poor choppy performance...Catalyst Drivers after 10.9 are borked for 4850 cards & GTA IV....

Not only have i now got water on Cats 10.9....

The annoying white line down the left hand side and top of screen and around the mini map has gone, mouse movement is far smoother and im getting an extra 15fps!!!! on average...

looks like crap! get MLAA working so you can get the performance free AA if you cant do it through the driver theres a hack to get it working on 4850 cards acording to google search

I remember there being some mention of the reflections scaling to your screen resolution, so the higher res you run, the more horsepower is needed to calculate/render them. There was some bodge you could do with launching in windowed mode to trick it and then changing to full-screen IIRC.

I enjoy playing this now and then but the performance isn't amazing. I might go and do some digging as there are bound to be hacks/mods around now to fix some of the problems...

Rockstar seem to have abandoned all hope of optimising it on PC...

Lol..one thing at a time, its taken me nearly a week just to get it to this level where its actually playable.:p

One of the most poorly ported games to date. Not only is it graphics hungry, it looks like ****.

acording to some people above its a good port :D
i think they forget when it was released is it 2 years ago now? it ran like **** on nearly every rig going and the patchs at first seemed to make the game look worse rather than actually optimise the game
