GTA4 Preview 2 In Depth

Well im still reading, but that article is incredible

every paragraph i go wow!, liberty city has its own internet?!?! cab rides?!?! just fantastic stuff so far :D

Here's the main points from the article for lazy people like me, how ironic:

Demo is running on Xbox 360.

PS3 version is a couple of weeks behind.

Framerate is good and improved since the last trailer.

It looks awesome.

In game music will span many genres and decades.

All NPC's are animated differently (fat cop is given as an example).

Each street is individually named, complete with street signs.

The is an internet cafe named "TW@"

You can hail a cab by whistling.

One time when they hailed a cab, a pedestrian was hit by the cab and the animation looked totally rhombus.

You can either sit and relax in the cab for the whole journey, skip the trip, or pay the driver double to go twice as fast.

You can see and talk to the driver.

While riding in a cab, the camera view change every five seconds which shows off lots of detail inside the cab, the tyres, things passing by outside etc.

People in cars move due to momentum of braking and accelerating.

Player can change music track while in a cab.

Traffic noise sounds very realistic and responsive to volume of traffic, types of verhicles going past, even when inside a building.

Mirrors on vehicles actually reflect.

No loading between interior and exterior areas.

In the internet cafe you can use the internet for $1 per session. It is still being worked on, but it will include lots of fun and usefull stuff.

The cell phone works as a calender, organiser, messaging device and a camera, just like a real phone.

Characters can convey emotion with movements and facial expressions.

When driving, the camera is positioned slightly to the driver's side of the car. There are also other camera angles to choose from.

Draw distance is very good.

There is a GPS system in the car that can be used to drive to unknown locations.

"Texture and detail in the city is unquestionably the highest quality we've seen in any next-gen game in a realistic setting, bar none."

Bus stops, people on cell phones, real pedestrian conversations, roadworks and workers, functioning hot dog stands, flower boxes, individually modelled trash in bins etc etc.

Wanted level evasion is based on line of site and search radius. The cops have your description and last known position, and if they identify you within their search radius as shown on the map, they will continue to chase you.

You can buy new clothes. A $1000 suit and $200 shoes are given as examples. These are required for an interview so as not to raise suspicion.

In the interview mission, you must kill a videogame hating lawyer :D

You can take cover behind anything.

Lots of destructable environments, even down to 'walk/don't walk' signs on trafic lights.

They only saw about 1/16th of the whole map in this preview.

Awesome!

finished reading, brilliant article. I am so rediculously hyped about this game now, EVERYTHING sounds amazing, sound, graphics, mission structure, transportation, car jacking, facial animations, combat controls (manual aim yippee!), cover system. It just all sounds sooo good. :D :D

When we got to our objective location, we were given the cell phone number of the blackmailer by Francis, who suggested we call him in an effort to figure out who he was. As we surveyed the nearby environment and made the call, we noticed a man answer his phone. While he was chatting him up, Niko slowly walked closer to the man, then hung up to see if he was the right guy. As soon as the man closed his phone, Niko’s gun was out, and he strode confidently over to where the man was sitting on the bench. Our “hero” put his pistol to his target’s head and smoothly pulled the trigger.

Now, I’ve played all of the Grand Theft Auto titles, but I never felt the emotional impact of the violence as much as I did with this one. First off, the crack of the pistol shattered the relative silence of the scene, and all of the journalists in attendance let out a collective gasp (as well as an extended “Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.”). Our target’s reaction to being shot was exaggerated and a bit unnerving, his head snapping back violently and blood gushing into the air as the crumpled to the ground. The game’s combat is quite intense (more on that in a bit), but somehow this execution-style killing disturbed us more than taking on a bunch of cops.

I really hope this game makes it to the shelves unlike manhunt 2 :)

It will. I don't suppose it will be any more controversial than previous GTA games.

This game is going to be AMAZING.

I'm sure Rockstar still have a few surprises for us that they are keeping secret.

yeah, the bits in the interview where they had to go out so that rockstar could do 'secret stuff' were pretty funny. I wonder what there keeping secret in the menu after he dies though?

yess, quality. I hope you can choose whether or not to kill someone, and I think people would think twice now before killing old grannies..

realisms awesome

Wasn't there an internet cafe in gta 3 named tw@? i know there was an open glass walls one on the middle island left as you got off the bridge from the first island and im pretty sure its name had the @ siymbol used in some ingenius way, maybe its the same place?

Goldberg sits across at his desk. The door is closed and Niko's free to do finish the job. Instead, he lets Goldberg yap on a bit. The lawyer is a talker. He likes Niko's resume and wants a man that can get a job done right. Niko listens. Goldberg rants on about decay in society. "Floss! Get rid of the decay," he says. Niko pulls out his gun.
"Whoa, whoa! Hold on a second there, friend. We're lawyers...we don't need guns. Guns don't kill people, video games do." Famous last words.

Gotta laugh at that, but im sure a certain US lawyer may not find it funny :D

I'm probably being really stupid here (it's late/early) but is GTA IV going to have multiplayer?

I've not read much about the game (want to keep it a mystery so that playing it is that much more "WOW").

Yes it will, but that is all we know so far, no details on MP game modes etc. at all yet.

I hope its not just a bunch of impressive features, rammed into the game and not actually well implimented

Hope they can back up their ambition
