GTA4 Preview 2 In Depth

"How to say: first impressions weren't exactly stellar. But that's because I'm both cynical and entirely superficial. Let's get this out of the way now because it's the least fair criticism I have to make. Visually, GTA IV's a shocker at the moment - sluggish, spasmodic frame rates, horrendous pop-up and bland interiors all brought back uncomfortable memories of Rockstar's previous insistence on pushing its PS2 engine much harder than it should feasibly be pushed. That said, when stationary, the game looks absolutely beautiful, with massive amounts of detail, impeccable modeling and some simply gorgeous lighting effects and texturing - all amounting to degrees of life we've yet seen in a videogame. Admittedly though, any technical complaints are pretty mute at this point in development - the demo build we saw is weeks old by now and Rockstar is adamant that engine wrinkles will be completely ironed out come release."

:(

uncomfortable memories of them pushing the ps2 to its limits ????

agreed on the pushing to its limits but the only memories i have where that the games where bloody amazing

I have faith in Rockstar that they will put things right and all will work out fine in the end. Such a big game everyone has a right to be a little worried I guess, but I can't see R* letting this flop.

While we are on the subject, is anyone else hoping for a purely 80's radio station in GTA IV? :D

The taxi's sound cool (paying double to go faster! haha), but otherwise wasn't overly impressed with the review.

I don't care too much for the internet feature, so long as they let you have your own music on the radio stations and the level of detail is consistent with what the reviewer claims then I'll be happy :)

Yeh I love 80s I hope the next gta is a vice city spin off :)

The atmosphere and colours would be fantastic.

you've got to remember this is unoptimized code, the article by the o.p. already said that the framerate had improved significantly over the previous build they'd seen, don't judge the game based on an unfinished build, Rockstar will get it right :)

If they are allowing user music in GTA4 then you could always create an 80s Smart Playlist in iTunes, then rip the music off the iPod and BAM.. you now have an 80s playlist for GTA4 :)

i heard that they are having trouble with the game on the 360, as they cannot assume every console has the hard drive (whereas every ps3 has), looks to me a little the same as the n64 with ram pack thing, and the 8.5gb dvd for the 360 is getting a bit small and having trouble fitting it on.

If i dont have a ps3 by the tiem this is released I will buy a 360/ps3 just for this game!

If that's the case they'd just allow people to download the add-ons, I doubt they'd compromise core bits in the release though.

I cannot wait for this game.

Although i'm not sure I like being able to just get in a taxi and skip the journey to get to a mission. Failing missions and having to drive miles is annoying but I think the first time you should have to actually do the journey.

Yeah the 'episodic content' lol maybe the 50mil was to hold content back so that it would fit on one DVD.

Either way GTAIV is gonna rock. But i would expect some of the detail etc to drop if they are having serious trouble with the framerate with only 3 months to go.

Jumpurs, that's a ridiculous comment to make. The 50 million was not given to stop content from going to the PS3, or to hold back data (lol) but was commisioned for Rockstar to create extra episodic content for the 360. This has been common knowledge for ages, but you slipped up on your subtle bias/trolling and dropped a right clanger there. ;)

Hey, it was a tongue in cheek remark, and wasn't meant to be taken seriously lol.

Can you listen to an mp3 player? Would be cool to rip music from your hard drive and put on your ingame mp3 player.. :D
