GTX 1070 giving a B2 bios error on MSI Z68 65A Mobo

Hmmm other guy had same problem with Sandy Bridge 2500K and GTX 960 with BIOS error B2 cant update BIOS higher than v23.7 found a solution to update BIOS 25.9 beta 3 with ME8 compatible with Sandy Bridge CPUs required for GTX 900 and 1000 series cards to boot properly.

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z68AGD65_G3
still no luck :-/ ... USB gets stuck at boot stage with just blinking...no movement in terms of BIOS update or any info on screen. Have to then re-boot.

Looks like I will have to RMA the card... and also probably the last time I buy a MSI motherboard! (should have stuck with Asus....)

I suggest you to watch MSI Forum Tool video incase you may missed something.

Make sure your USB stick are on number 1 boot priority order. If it still not work then try put USB stick in every USB ports until you find a port that work.

If you still cant update BIOS 25.9 beta 3 with ME8 from bootable USB stick, I had time to read Z68A-GD65 (G3) user manual, you could try restore BIOS to defaults then enabled all USB 2.0 controllers, enabled legacy USB Support, enabled onboard USB 3.0 controller, disabled secure boot, disabled Multi BIOS Auto Update to stop secondary BIOS flash back to primary BIOS.

If above suggestion will not work then it worth a try to install Winki software from MSI DVD disc and then go back to UEFI setup to use Live Update to see if you can download and flash BIOS 25.9 beta 3, if it STILL not work then try disconnect SATA cable to your hard drive and see if USB stick will work in all USB ports.

So if everything failed then I had a great suggestion you to try flash BIOS from DVD and hard drive with bootable EFI Shell and forget about use USB stick because you cant boot the bloody USB stick in all ports.

1. Create new folder at root of C:.

2. http://www.winiso.com/download.html to download and install free WinISO 5.3 version: http://www.winiso.com/user/download/winiso-5.3.zip

3. The rEFInd Boot Manager http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ to download CD image http://sourceforge.net/projects/refind/files/0.11.2/refind-cd-0.11.2.zip/download and open zip file, move refind-cd-0.11.2.iso to new folder.

4. https://www.wimsbios.com/amiflasher.jsp and download latest AFUEFI Flasher 5.05.04 from AMI site https://ami.com/?AMIBIOS_and_Aptio_AMI_Firmware_Update_Utility.zip and open zip with WinRAR, navigate to AMIFLASH/AMIBIOS/AFUDOS folder move AFUDOS.exe file to a new folder and also go to AMIFLASH/AptioV/AFU/AFUEFI/64, open AFUEFI64.zip and navigate to AFUEFI64 folder and move AFUEFIX64.EFI file to new folder.

5. Open BIOS 25.9 beta 3 file E7681IMS.rar and move both E7681IMS.P93 and valcheck.com files you downloaded from MSI forum to new folder.

6. Launch WinISO 5.3, navigate to new folder, open refind-cd-0.11.2.iso, move AFUDOS.exe, AFUEFIX64.EFI and to root of iso. Save iso and burn iso to DVD-RW disc.

7. Go to UEFI to boot DVD first priority, save setting and boot PC so you should see rEFInd Boot Manager and click on EFI Shell then look at device table for your DVD drive and try type in either AFUDOS and AFUEFIX64 command to flash BIOS 25.9 beta 3 file. If you cant find DVD drive on device table then you can try access your NTFS hard drive and navigate to new folder and try flash BIOS from NTFS hard drive.

The MSI Forum Tool is that only for registered users as the files dont seem to be there unless im missing something.

attached files are visible for logged-in users.

Yes it for registered users so I been registered both MSI GTX 970 and MSI GTX 1070 years ago. I logged in MSI and clicked the link so I can see the MSI Forum Tool file:

MSIHQ Tool 1.28j Installer_2017.rar (3254.42 kB - downloaded 5400 times.)

I downloaded 25.9 BIOS beta 3 file, it is E7681IMS.rar contained 2 files E7681IMS.P93 and valcheck.com.

I think you can still register MSI as you owned MSI motherboard. If you cant register on MSI then I could upload both files somewhere so you can download it. :)

Edit: I guess it could save your bother and time as I uploaded both files for you to download it. :)

BIOS update finally worked!! ... Special thanks for AthlonXP1800 and Mickyflinn for the continuos support!

So I tried three different USB drives .. a Sandisk Cruzer 8 GB, a generic 16GB and a Sony 4GB

The Sony one worked with the MSIHQ Boot tool (the others didn't). ..the only thing I did differently with the Sony though, was to use the 'Fix' option when running the MSIHQ Tool whereas with the others I didn't use the 'Fix' option first and just created a bootable USB...anyhow not sure whether this matters or whether the brand matters... So I tried first updating with the latest BIOS from MSI ..it seemed to do this pretty quickly... I then rebooted, went back into BIOS and checked the version..it was the same as the old one... I then re-ran the tool with the 25.9BIOS Beta 3 above.. THIS ONE worked!

I will now update my intel ME drivers to v.8 ... not going to install the G-card today..too tired for that...saving the grand finale for tomorrow...will let you know how that goes! :D

Glad you got it sorted in the end & I hope it fixes your GFX card issue. I had the same problem with that board and my 970 and the BIOS update did the trick.

(one minor side-effect though...all this frequent re-booting with BIOS update attempts seems to have killed off one of my WD Blacks which shows as 'offline' in my degraded RAID1 array...I bought it in Aug2011 so I guess it's had a fair run and due a replacement :))

Hmm, that drive had a fair run indeed but funny it RIP'd when flashing BIOS. Makes me wonder if removing power from drives when flashing BIOS might be a good precaution. Hadn't thought of that.

turns out that it was a dodgy cable...the new drive I ordered had the same issue so I swapped the cable for a new one... don't know if the BIOS flashing fried the cable or what!
