I've recently got a GTX 260 and noticed that the core and shader clocks are linked... why is this?

Is it better to keep them linked from either a performance or OC point of view, or should they be unlinked and OC'd separately?

Have you tried using EVGA's Precision software?

On the 8800 series it allowed you to unlink the clocks.

Oh, just re-read your comment. The best performance gains IIRC are got from the shader clock, so yes it's best to unlink them.
