Actually games coded for DX 10.1 give a decent performance boost over DX10.
And so will DX11 cards.

A failed GPU will probably render both of the 295 variants useless.
From the reviews I have read the older versions looks better than the new low cost single PCB version.

Go for gtx 285 sli (x2/x3). The gtx 285 is faster than the gtx 295. Remember the gtx 295 is just two gtx 260's joined together and overclocked.
