are these still fast cards? currently bidding for one on a certain site and the price is looking good at the moment, it comes with EK waterblock as well. how do these compare to GTX 460/470/480, not so bothered about DX11, i have DX10 card thats hardly ever uses its DX10 ability so im not optimistic about DX11 taking off :) also anyone know how much you could expect to get for a mint condition, boxed BFG 8800GTS G92?

u shouldnt tell ppl about ur find until the auction is over imo ;p

its alright, there are quite a few GTX 295s on that certain site at the moment, some of them stonking prices, probably due to the GTX 480, etc. so they are fast cards then? do they make much noise, get too hot, etc?

yeah i know the 4870X2 is a stonking card still, see loads of them available as well at the minute due to them being 'slightly' outdated. heard they generate mountains of heat though...?

how you think a 4870X2 would compare to a GTX 470 for example? cause the only thing the new cards seem to offer is DX11, which im not really concerned about. that and my 8800GTS is starting to get a bit long in the tooth i think!

This review (drop down menu to see other tests) shows graphically how the GTX 295 holds up to a GTX 480/470/460 and ATI 5970/5870/5850 and many more.

It still does very well, I for one am happy to have one.

ah, a GTX 295 owner :) am i right in thinking they work like SLI, but on in a single card, no bridge or anything? are they as huge as they look, because gonna be using a silverstone mATX case and that could be a concern, unless im ok with a card sticking out the end of the case! :D

they still are a great card particualy becasue you can get them for around £200 now if not less

Yehh its great, but as you say heat and power consumption is something to contend with when you get one. Also DX11 isn't widely used yet and in some games it easily trades blows with the 5870, 470, 480

I've recently sold mine to fund a 5870 though as my room started to feel like a furnace after a couple of hours on bad company 2 with both cores maxed out. I also didn't like the power consumption much. I mapped out a fan profile in afterburner so noise wasn't really an issue. I ran into a few issues in a couple of games where it doesn't utilise both gpu cores or one core doesn't run at 3D clocks, etc. In the end I got fed up and went back to a cooler single gpu solution lol

That's not to say the 4870X2 is a bad card. When it works to its full potential in games its still a beast. It was a bit of a love hate relationship with me when I had it. As ever with ati/amd I believe the drivers were at fault here, not the card.

lots of online reviews show the GTX 295 beating GTX 480s in games, no benchmarks, i tend to take most of these with a pinch of salt, thats why i made the thread :) well you guys have been a great help, thanks :)

Aye, that's it exactly. It is basically two sandwiched together with an internal SLI. Technically it is 2x GTX 275 cores that have been underclocked (so it will work in a single card package). It is certainly a big card - at 10.5 inches long, so make sure your case can fit it.

Which case (and PSU) are you planning to use out of interest?

the case i was looking at was silverstone SG02 (they seem fairly spacious for mATX case) and OCZ modstream 600W for the power supply, that be ok do you think? :)

Unfortunately, on the Silverstone SG-02 spec page it says:

Expansion Card - Compatible up to 9.6"

From the Nvidia GTX 295 site (specifications page):

Length 10.5 inches (267 mm)

Sorry man :(

Unfortunately the Nvidia GTX 480, ATi 5870 and 5970 are also too long.

However, the Nvidia GTX 470 and ATI 5850 are both 9.5" - so these are worth a look (I would be more tempted by the 5850 due to its lower power/heat for in your relatively small case).

Yep, basically a single card version of what im running (2 x gtx 275's), psu im using is a corsair hx 850w, basic spec in sig with a blu ray drive, 3 hdd's fan controller and a xonar dx sound card, might not have DX11 but it cuts through any game i play with relative ease.

the case isn't set in stone, could just go for another small case, question is are GTX 295s worth £200?

£200?? I would say "heck yes".

As previously stated, in most games it performs approximately on par with a GTX 480 (say 5% slower), uses about the same amount of power and is slightly quieter and cooler. Oh, and it is about half the price (if you can get it for 200).

The only worry would be the warranty - I got mine from EVGA so I know that if it dies in the next decade I will get a replacement card of equal or better power. If you buy the card second hand and the seller doesn't agree to RMA any faults for you (or provide you with the original purchase details so you can do it yourself) then if it breaks you are stuck with a £200 paperweight.
