GTX 295

hmm...well could get the GTX 295 and sell my 8800GTS G92 and spare 8800GTS G80, plus need to get rid of some other stuff have lying about, my ASUS A8N-SLI, don't even know why i still have that! member market a good place to put stuff for sale?

Aye, its a very good place to sell your stuff.

People are friendly and honest and you don't have to pay the fees associated with auction services (if you do payment via bank transfer there are zero fees). So long as you package the goods well (no bare jiffy bags :)) and abide by the MM rules and guidelines then it is very smooth indeed.

To be honest- S939 won't command much on the MM (as it is old tech and people here know their stuff).

But seriously, go on "a popular auction site" now and see how much s939 boards (and that one specifically) go for -its mad.

might have to, since its only been used for a couple of months, think would be better putting board together with athlon X2 3800+? :D

No m8 - sell that separately.

Seriously, I am looking at listings of that board between £50-70 and that CPU between £35-50.

But for your graphics cards I would certainly give the MM a try.

well, ended up getting a great deal on a HIS 4870X2 instead of GTX 295, substancially less expensive. now my single biggest concern, since it shall be posted in a day or two is temperatures. i know 4870X2s run insanely hot (94*C and what not under load) which is very high, judging by the pictures of the PCB i have seen, looks like it has same mounting holes as 4870, does anyone think is possible/worthwhile mounting two thermalright V2 copper VGA coolers on the card with some quiet 92mm fans, VRAM heatsinks, etc. don't think its remotely possible to fit two HR-03s on them unless...one was wrapped around the board and the other wasn't...?

also its same sort of price to get two V2s as it is to get arctic cooling accelero 4870X2, think there'll be much difference in temperatures?

^^Personally I'd see how it goes to start with. I think I am right in saying that HIS cards tend to be pretty good at running cool. As you can see in my sig I also have an HIS x2. At idle in this weather the hotter of the two gpu's runs well below 50C at idle. I rarely need to raise the fan speed above 45% for gaming. Mind you my case has plenty of ventilation which might have something to do with it. :)

If you find temps unsatisfactory and have tried various drivers (10.4 here) then maybe it would be worth buying the accelero. By all accounts a very fine cooler. Also keep it clean, was about to sell mine many months ago what with constantly rising idle temps and therefore more noise. Cleaned it out, glad I did, runs so much cooler. I was very surprised. Enjoy! :)

what sort of temperatures do you get under heavy load? im sure the stock cooler is perfectly fine for stock clock speeds, etc. but wouldn't mind having a go at overclocking it. :D by the layout of the PCB im thinking it would be possible to mount two V2s side by side on each core, i think they are narrow enough! but i shall see how it goes with stock for time being ;)

Ok, well am playing a bit of Stalker atm. Just alt-tabbed out of the game and with the fan @ 50% temps were around very low 50's for gpu 1 and about 70 for gpu 2. Seems quite a bit of difference between them but hey. I'd say Stalker makes the card work reasonably hard. To overclock the card I think you'll have to adjust voltages, doubt you'll get much of an overclock otherwise.

thats not bad temperatures at all, thats with stock cooler and stock thermal compound? the guy gave it a clean before selling so i might take cooler assembly off and apply some AS5 or ceramique. with CPU cooling AS5 can make couple *C difference, whats better for GPU, AS5 or Ceramique? :D

^^Yes, stock cooler, nothing touched or tampered with. I can't comment on which paste to use, I have never applied paste to a gpu or cpu so you already know more about that than myself.

I can say my card is very quiet at idle - I can't really hear it at all. The fan is below 30% so it's almost inaudible, giving me, as I mentioned idle temps (as I type) of 36 gpu 1 / 47 gpu 2. If I didn't use earphones in game then noise would be a problem but that applies to just about all high end / most graphics cards. :)

When temps start to rise and a quick blast of canned air doesn't do the trick, I'll take it apart again and clean it out thoroughly.

what about the cooler, looks like a pain to remove, has like thirteen screws or something? definately gonna stick with stock cooler for the time being but it noise is a problem (system is very quiet <30db) then I might consider switching to twin thermalright V2s. :D

Yeah, there's a heck of a lot of screws to remove but eventually you can get it to release the shroud and cooler. If you do this then do make sure you don't lose any screws and bear in mind that some of them are slightly different sizes, not that this should cause you any problems. I found that just when I thought I had discovered all the screws there was one or two more discreetly tucked away somewhere, no wonder I couldn't get the darn thing off. :D

I have 2 running in quad sli and have had no problems with them at all. I'll probably get rid of them sometime when something catches my eye but not atm. Under heavy load I've seen mine go to 78 degrees which is not too bad and as long as you have sufficient airflow within the case then it wll be fine.

Yeah, I'd say so. Not trying to sound patronising but just make sure when you perform 'surgery' :D you do it on something with a firm flat surface, then you shouldn't have any problems. :)

Out of interest perhaps you can help me. I can't remember what thread it was the other week, but I think I'm right in saying that you can tri-fire a 4890 with a 4870X2? If so then I may well buy one tonight.

Thank you for the link. :) Guess a 4890 will just down clock to 4870 speeds then? I should just look around for a 4870 but OcUk have a 4890 in stock.
