GTX 460 266.58 driver issues

My grahpics driver install keeps bugging out and reporting an older version. GPU-Z and other system info programs report it at 266.58 but games like Age of Conan complain that my driver is older.

Then when I use the H.A.W.X. 2 hardware detection tool it reports that my driver is 103.04

i'd leave it alone but i notice a big performance drop in some games. ESpecially Rift. I find that my GPU usage is incosistent and gameplay is very choppy regardless of graphics settings. This is especially true in Sanctum and in PvP/warfronts.

Here's the funny thing. If I reinstall my drivers (Custom Install>Clean Install) then HAWX 2 shows 266.58 as the version and the performance in Rift is great even at max settings, and Age of Conan stops complaining about my driver version...
But EVERY TIME i restart my driver reverts back to 103.04 according to the hawx2 tool, AoC starts complaining and Rift becomes annoying to play.

Anybody else haivng this problem or have any idea why this is?

I'm using
Windows 7 64 SP1.
GTX 460 768 MB

I tried completely disabling Kaspersky through the install and restart but it made no difference. It's like I have to clean install my driver every time I restart my PC.

I have half a mind to try the new beta drivers instead.

Any ideas?

EDITL 270.51 beta drivers didn't help :/

hmm sounds like a difficult one.

I know that when a gpu doesnt want to play nice, its a horrible afair.

Im having unpredicatble and illogical problems with a Nvidia gpu at work.

Have you tried a fresh install of windows? Hypothetically that should solve your problem.

Yes it sucks :( .. I've considered reinstalling, but to be honest I'd rather keep reinstalling drivers on every boot than redo my windows at hte moment as I have too many programs/files etc strewn about that are critical and got deadlines. I am hoping for a different fix because I can't handle any downtime of my PC till May/June :(

another detail:
Am using CUDA toolkit 3.2... Half a mind to unistall it. I was using an older driver for CUDA before. I wonder if that's part of the problem...

You should not need to disable antivirus etc.. just to install a display driver.

What I would do if you havent, is unistall all Nvidia drivers etc....

Reboot.

Upon login delete any Nvidia files remaining in program files

Install the latest drivers, from the website

reboot if required.

Thanks Opeth, I uninstalled the crap out of everything NVIDIA and ASUS (my card is ASUS), then I restarted, reinstalled the drivers, and restarted again.. and voila. The HAWX2 reports the new drivers.

Hopefully it doesn't revert with yet another restart :) But so far so good.

EDIT: Yep... fully fixed now even after reboot :)
