GTX 660 causing hard drive problems

I can't imagine it would be a PSU issue, from memory the 5800 cards will use more power than a 660, it's also a quality PSU.

Have you tried the card in a different pcie slot?

Failing this I would try a new m/b, a pretty drastic step but I think the card and hard drive have been tried in different systems so you know they work ok.

Hard drive model number is:
ST31000528AS
Firmware revision:
CC38

I haven't tried the graphics in a different slot actually.
Can I plug it into a x8 slot instead of a x16 ?

I'm going to dig out some spare sata cables tomorow aswell and do some trial and error.
there are so many sata slots on this mobo there are probably a lot of different combinations to go through.

It will not touch the data on your drive, but you should always have a back up of the important stuff.

Just download and run the program, let it do its thing.

Have a bit of faith :D

Ok so I've updated the firmware on the hard drive we are now running CC49.
The problem remains unchanged.

I also tried the card in all my PCI express slots, no change there and I found a fresh SATA cable but again no difference.

Tech support has suggested trying my brothers PSU in my computer and although it's going to be a ball ache to strip out both psu's I kind of don't see any other option at this point.

I'd like to thank you all again for working with me on trying to fix this issue.
Hopefully we will get there in the end :)

Hold on a sec....

Just put your bros pc next to yours and hook the hdd into his power, but sata connected to yours.

power your bros pc up, wait 30secs then power yours

if the clicking still happens then it is a problem with your rig and not your psu.

Have you physically removed the hdd from your case yet?
Remove it from the case and then test it thin sitting on the desk.

I can't really get the hard drive out of the case.
It's screwed into a bracket which is screwed into the case.
So I can't remove it without taking the whole bracket out, which means removing the cpu fan, taking out the RAM and unplugging all the SATA cables.

I don't think it's the PSU anymore because I tried my bro's GTX260 in my rig and that worked fine.
According to nvidia site and most other card review sites I checked the 260 uses more power than the 660.
So if it was a power supply issue I should have got the same clicking with the 260 but I didn't.
Also when I first installed the 660 I benchmarked it on 3 differesnt settings and it performed great. Good frames and no clicks or cut outs.
If it was a power supply issue I should not be able to use the card at all surely ?

I also don't think the hard drive is at fault because it works fine with the 5800 and with the 260.
It's just the 660 it doesn't work with and niether did my brothers hard drive when it was in my case, even though it worked fine in his case.

That leaves the sata cable and the motherboard.
I have changed the sata cable and that didn't work.

So I'm left thinking that the motherbord is incompatible.

Eventually you will get around to telling us the Harddrive is not plugged into the native Intel controller Sata port....I'm guessing :D

Hehe
I wouldn't be surprised, seeing as it seems he has removed and examined every componant except the one actually making the noise :D

Alright I took your advice and removed the hard drive.
Unfortuantely this didnt help.
I have also tried the sata cable in every slot and none of them work.

I did manage to update the bios to the latest version and this has stopped the clicking but now when I load up the graphics card is unistalled.
When I try to install the drivers I downloaded I get "Nvidia installer failed"
and under the device manager I get the message "windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)"

I did also try the card and my harddrive in my brothers computer and everything worked fine so it looks like it's just an issue with my mobo.

Tech support has issued me an RMA to return the card so it looks like I won't be getting an upgrade anytime soon :(

But anyway thanks to everyone who put thier ideas forward.
It's much appreciated.

Hi everyone

Sorry for the delay

I just wanted to let you know that after updating to the latest BETA BIOS and doing a fresh install of windows everything is now working.

So it was the motherboard that was causing the problems.

Thanks for all the help
Scott

It might not be same thing but I had similar problems when installing new graphics last year and it turned out to be a faulty hard drive.
