GtX 770 or XFX R9 280X

please 280x are voltage limited same as 770 , vram depends if he geos for 4 gig model , only it has wider bus, doubt its move overclocable ten 770 ,but

it is much cheaper and there practically same performance and i seen 280x for 169£ in b grade so still go for 280x , as 770 prices to high.

Most models aren't. In fact its rare to find voltage locked 280X cards. If they are locked its very easy to unlock them as i did for someone here not long ago. I believe the only voltage locked 280X ocuk (used to) sell is no longer listed.

I think the OP would be happy with a single 290P or GTX 780 this would give higher minimums and enable him to use decent settings for BF4 @1080p

2x280X will give him more grunt and the grunt to use that 3gb of vram. I agree that a 290 now and another later would be better, but if he's on a set budget then 2x280X would be faster over a single 290.

LOL 770s aren't THAT much slower (if at all) than 280X. To all intents and purposes they're pretty even in today's terms. Certainly not different enough to categorically recommend one or the other.

Specs don't matter; performance does. And the two cards perform very, very closely to each other.

That said I would buy a 280X all things considered and go that route. If you've been nVidia historically you may be flummoxed by the (IMO) decrease in the usability of the drivers but overall now AMDs drivers are almost up there on the look and feel aspect as nVidia's.

Before I get climbed upon the look and feel comment is purely my own opinion having used both over time.

Marginally, yes. But the long and short is you can't really go wrong with either. But push comes to shove I would personally go for the 280X.

280X's in crossfire will spank your 470's don't worry. :)

Look at the benchmark threads. 770's are well below 280X's/7970's in most things.

You won't be able to max BF4 out @1080p with a 280X or 770 either.

The problem is with the 470s you are limited by the VRAM and with the 280X/770 you are limited by the GPU grunt.

If you were to use a 290P neither lack of VRAM or GPU grunt would be a problem.

With 2x280X he will max out BF4 easily, if he went down to x2AA i bet one 280X could do it, though it may need to be overclocked. Sure Petey can confirm as hes rocking a couple of 7970's at 1080P.

The problem is then the OP has to use two cards plus waterblocks if he wants to put them in his loop.

A single 290P plus waterblock is a lot cheaper and also leaves room for future upgrading.

I hear you, but i assumed that was not a problem as he's already using three cards. If he's going to add another card (at a later date) then a 290 makes more sense than short term 2x280X.

Do not buy GK104s, and im serious. They're pathetically weak cards sold for way more than their actual value.

If you can, get a 290 or a 780. If you NEED to stick to 280x or 770 then get a Sapphire 280x toxic or something.
