Posting on behalf of a friend who is currently pulling his hair out.

He bought a windforce 780 ghz edition to replace his 580 sli setup, had no issues with previous cards. PSU is up to the task, new version of 8.1 and 7 installed. He is getting a steam of directx and direce 3d errors on start up of every game. Heaven 4.0 runs and completes with a good score and exhibits zero problems benching. Temps are low and no artifacting at all.

Any ideas?

Mine was doing that at the start, turned out the onboard graphics on my 2700 were turned on in the bios.I could run heaven no problem but got random crashes even in windows, all good now though it took me a few weeks to figure it out

The problem occurs on win 7 and win 8.1, the windows 8.1 installation is very recent. He can sometimes game for 5 minutes before the crash, mainly directx errors. He has tried different slots, disabled onboard gpu etc and still it crashes...think he has now started the rma procedure.

For windows 8 & 8.1 needs to get the DX from microsoft and install it.

Is common knowledge.

Has he tried underclocking it? It might be an unstable factory overclock ( I bought a zotac 660ti once, which couldn't reach the factory overclock so kept crashing in games - as soon as I underclocked it, it ran fine (I still sent it back)).

Dont know if he has tried underclocking it but we suspected it might be unstable and gave it some more juice, no change. What is puzzling me is that it will pass heaven 4.0 no sweat, but give it a game and it will error anytime between game launch and 5 mins in.

I would try underclocking it ( maybe put it to stock spec for a 780) and see what happens. If it then runs games flawlessly you will know it is the factory overclock and you can RMA it.

Hi i had the same problem with my evga acx 780,i think it was to do with the boost and the voltage. basically in some games the card only went to core clock levels and the card didn't get enough volts, to fix this go into nvidia control panel and change the power management mode to prefer maximum performance or get evga precision and enable kboost both options work for me. hope this helps.

Does he have Samsung Magician installed? this does bad things with how it interfaces with the GPU :( which it never should and causes DX errors and/or games being constantly pulled out of fullscreen mode and losing context on some configurations. (Its enough just to kill the process doesn't need to be uninstalled).
