My son is looking to purchase a laptop for university with a little bit of gaming but they only have either the 2GB 960 or 2GB 1050 for £40 more, I assume the 1050 should be better but is it worth the extra £40?

According to this they appear very similar, the 1050 has double the pixel fill rate so it should be much better for gaming particularly at higher resolutions (1080P) but you might be held back by the 2GB VRAM and other factors anyway.

The 1050 is newer so technically should have better support and lifespan, but it depends what little bit of gaming consists of? Both could be way overkill meaning a price you don't need to pay.. does his uni use consist of any cad/photoshop/music/editing? Demanding software use similar?

Only light gaming on CSGO, Overwatch, Rocket League, Fifa on Medium/High settings when he is on his break, over to his friends house and travel as other heavy games, he can play on his gaming computer at home and probably won't be gaming on the laptop often after he graduates if he finds a job so will just use the laptop for work.

For his uni work, he will need to use Virtualbox, Photoshop, Microsoft Office and coding applications.

What resolution is the screen? if it's 1440x900 or higher I'd go with the 1050 if you want to run games at native resolution. If it's lower or you aren't bothered about possibly having to run games upscaled just go with the 960.

The screen resolution is 1920x1080 and he would like to run the games at native resolution so the 2GB 1050 will be perfectly fine? As there is a option for 4GB 1050Ti for £51 more but will it be overkill for his needs?

It's hard to say but the general consensus on here would be to get 4GB for 1080P gaming but as it's a laptop and he's only using it for light gaming then 2GB might be fine. Perhaps some others can advise as I'm the type that would rather just pay more up front even if it's overkill than regret being a cheapskate later. :p

What processor and how much system memory does it have out of interest?

edit: I'd definitely recommend at least the 1050 though, the 960 only has 16 ROP's and that's not really good enough for 1080P.

It has i7 7700HQ processor with 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM.

Oh right I thought you were going to say dual core or something, with those specs I'd definitely go with 1050Ti if you want a well balanced system, you should be able run high details with 4GB VRAM.

Certainly the 1050 then, mean I don't know how much you spending on this laptop, but if you was prepared to pay an extra £50 for more VRAM, would there not be a laptop with a better gpu for that little extra or an extra your willing to pay?

I haven't played CS in years and I don't know why people care to get 200-200fps from it, but you can run that game on pretty much anything, overwatch while it doesn't seem to have too demanding of a spec(something like a dual core2duo or whatever as a minimum), it might likely be taxing on the gpu, rocket league won't be demanding and I doubt FIFA will, so really gaming wise its what be best for overwatch, but while the i7 will be ideal for the uni work, I haven't read many spec posts with the desktop 1050 suggested for it.

The laptop is £730 with i7 7700HQ, 16GB DDR4 RAM and 2GB 1050 or 4GB 1050Ti for £781. I don't mind paying the extra £51 for the Ti with 2GB extra VRAM but will it be overkill for his needs as he already has a gaming computer at home.

Also, I have looked at laptops with 1060 just to compare the price but they start at £1k.

When he plays CSGO, he caps the FPS to 62 and I have looked at laptops with 1050 running Overwatch on Ultra settings getting 70-80 FPS so that shouldn't be a problem.

Personally I'd pay the extra £51 for the Ti, just to 'future proof' it that little bit. I wouldn't bother with looking at the 1060 for £200+ more though, the price would be getting silly.

Always go for newer tech, well... within reason like in your case. 1050 newer, only a little bit more, most probably a little bit better battery life on the laptop with 1050 as well vs 960.

May i ask what laptop you're looking at, looking for one as well and that price has caught my eye :p
