Hi everyone, I'm interested in getting a sff with a gtx 980 in it. Which case and spec would you all recommend? I really like the look of the prodigy, but I have been told it's not very good at cooling? Was thinking of liquid cooling the processor tho, so would the poor cooling still be an issue if I did?

This sff rig is to replace my ps4, so will be connected to my TV and surround sound.

My ideal spec sheet is:
Prodigy case
Gtx 980
I5k processor with liquid cooling
2tb hard drive
Any decent motherboard
16gb 1600mhz ram
A gold rated psu.
Blu Ray drive.

Would this be a good build that'll last me a few years?

Thanks

Ian

Morning I an

Firstly, you say this is going through your TV, what res is your TV, 1080p 60hz? If so, you'd be better off (budget and size wise with a GTX 970. They do a mini itx version 970 which is no long than an itx board (13.5cm). The 970 will blast through 1080p for a long while to come.

The prodigy is a good case but it really isn't small. The 250D is worth a look for a small watercooled gaming system, as it unashamedly negate the room for decent air coolers but includes a handle 240mm rad bracket.

Getting an i5, 4690k is a good plan, amazing CPU. 8gb is fine for gaming but if you can spare some extra money why not but its by no means essential.

What is your budget and are you able/willing to build yourself?

Hi doomedspeed,

The budget is around £1300, maybe £1400 at a push. Yes, the TV is a 1080p, not sure of the refresh rate tho. My plan is for this rig to last a few years, hence the 980. Trying to future proof it as much as I can :)

I've tried building a rig myself before, it didn't turn out well. So planning on either buying the bits and someone else putting it together, or building a mini pc on overclockers configurator.

The 16gb ram is me trying to future proof again :)

Thanks

Ian

GTX 980, fits with room to spare.

Cooler and fans are out of stock but should be back soon.

You can contact OCUK and ask themto build for you, im not sure on the cost though. youll have to ask in the CS forum.

My first idea was more like this:

YOUR BASKET

1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £59.99
1 x OcUK Value Blu-ray / DVDRW combi SATA - OEM £39.95
Total : £1,031.95 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Much closer to £1k.

Slower blu-ray but still great for just casual use.

GTX 970 is still massively capable.

8GB of fast RAM.

What do you think?

.. and get them too add the CPU cooler and blu drive over the phone.. :) They are more than happy too, :)

Thanks :) I don't know much about that case, will it keep the gpu cool with just air cooling or would I have to liquid cool that too?

Thanks again

Ian

I think the GPU will be cooler in that than the Prodigy. The reason is the case has a vented panel right by where the GPU sits, allowing it to intake/expel air through the side. Ideal.

That is the reason i didn't pick a reference card (as below) due to air coming out the back ofthe reference coolers (it makes them better for SLI but no small cases)

Example of reference card:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Palit GeForce GTX 980 "Reference Design" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (NE5X980015G2-PG401F) £439.99
Total : £449.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you want to know more about the case OCUK have imbedded a video of the case on the product page, ill do the same here. He goes into a lot of detail, which should help you understand more about the product. If you've not seen a TTL video before (its 30 minutes long) you're in for a treat sir :)

I do like the case on that one! Is that power supply enough for a 980 tho?

Thanks

Ian

450w would be enough for a 970 but a 980 is pushing it.

Also, is there a point of having a K series i7 but not being able to OC it (in that case, with that cooler). The 250D is better in that respect.

i disagree. see here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1355?vs=1351
scroll to the bottom and you'll see that the power draw is roughly equivalent.

you could get a modest overclock. but of course not as much as a proper heatsink unfortunately

OK, well how about the corsair carbide air 240 case? That looks like it could suit my needs? Like the style of it too. Overclocking is something I might look at in the future, I don't really know how to do it yet :)

Ian

How does this build look? The only thing I would want is liquid cooling for the cpu, unless that air cooler would be OK?

Thanks

Ian

So would the reference design 980 be better than an open air cooler 980 for the carbide 240? There's that many options it gets confusing!

Ian

OK no worries. Thanks. Just had a thought, probably going to have to get a new TV to do this new rig justice :) the Mrs is gonna kill me :)

Ian

Hi everyone, does anybody know much about the Silverstone raven RVZ01 case? Looks like the perfect one for my TV set up?

Thanks
