GTX 980 SLI or GTX 970 SLI for 4k resolution

Probably best to take advice from people that own and have experience of running 4k. I wouldnt take much notice from the armchair experts who make assumptions from what they have gathered from other non owners around the internet.

Of course 120fps matched with 120hz and IPS would be great. But most cant afford that at 1440p either yet. I have enjoyed the jump from 1080 to 2160 and thought having the monitor would be a great excuse to upgrade from my 7990. But I've been pleased with how the 7990 holds up. Been playing lots of games agian at 4k. Hitman Absolution, Dishonoured, Deus Ex human revolution and I play BF4 lots. I'm pleased with my 4k and games look spanking. You dont need as much AA which is a performance killer over that many pixels. If you can afford 2 980's then I'd take 3 970's but I'd read the Guru3d review on 970/980 3&4 SLi review as the current drivers it doesnt scale well. I'd get 2 970's which overclock to stock 980's and maybe add a 3rd later once drivers are optimised to warrant a 3rd. Enjoy whatever you decide.

I do have 4k.

Some games are fine. But if you want ultra graphics settings even with AA off (or post process only) there are games that aren't exactly fluid on my 295x2.

The Vanishing of Ethan carter is one that springs to mind.

Just because I posted after you doesnt mean I am referring to anything you said. On the contrary, the OP should listen to what you have to say as you have experience of owning and running 4k.

Agree that not ALL games are fluid @ 4k

JUst cranking everything to maximum is pointless at 4k as some of the benefits of 4k mitigates some of the processes we have become accustomed to to make graphics less pixellated. Very high resolutions do not require as much processing thus demand on the GPU. It wasnt so long ago that we struggled at max for 1080p. 4k is ready and IS mainstream as manufacurers are producing. GPU's arent ready - or is it beacuse we are drip fed performance increase?
