As the title suggests, gtx 980ti, in a mini ITX case (Cooler Master Elite 130 in this instance).

It will fit, but is it sensible? Heat etc an issue?

It might work if it has a blower type cooler. I would probably wait for a GTX1080 unless you have the card already.

Ah this isn't for me I'm just throwing some ideas about for a mate, and it was one of the EVGA acx models

Thing is for the gtx1080 I've got a £1k price tag in my head for some reason. Has any pricing info been let out yet?

Well Polaris and Pascal should be out during the summer - both will be made on new nodes and should have better performance/watt. I can't see Nvidia pricing the top cards more than a GTX980TI.

Less heat that needs to be chucked out,the better with a SFF rig IMHO OFC.

I had a 980Ti in my Evolv ITX and it never went about 70c which is what it sat at when it was in the big case before that. It was a reference card though.

The Evolve is a pretty big SFF case though and has far better cooling - unless the OP has a blower cooler GTX980TI,in a Elite 130,it will rely on trying to disperse the heat through the side panel which will get quite hot under extended periods.

The newer generation cards will reduce power consumption so should be a better fit for an Elite 130 IMHO.

Ive been using a gtx 980ti in a thermaltake core v1 with 2 80mm exhaust fans and temps were fine. before the 980ti i used a msi 290 gaming and temps were normal with that to. the intake was a aio with push/pull 120mm fans.

This.

I've just built a mini-ITX machine (well, upgraded) and installed MSI's Armor 2x 980 Ti. It's an open as opposed to blower cooler, but the case airflow is good enough. I figure I could bring the temperatures down across the board by improving airflow through the case.
980 Ti is totally fine, just make sure case ventilation is up to scratch.

As long as you have reasonably good airflow inside the CM 130 it's fine; airflow in/out matters a lot more than the internal volume of the case. Given you've only got a single 120mm and a single 80mm to work with, the case will warm up with a blower but it won't exactly be fatal with a modern Intel quad unless you really push the CPU's overclock.

Used the same case for my brother's PC and it has plenty of space and ventilation for high end GPUs, the side vents allows the fans on the GPU to draw cool air directly from outside, and there's enough free space above the GPU for the heat to naturally escape out of the top vents.

There's a Linus video recently where Luke pretty much shut off all airflow in the case to monitor changes to temps both CPU and GPU, it literally made bugger all difference, it seems as though as long as the fan directly fitted to the CPU/GPU cooler can blow air over it then it has minimal effect.

As long as there's some holes in the case panels and a fan somewhere then I'd wager it will be fine, maybe one or two degrees higher than a really open case with lots of fans but nothing to bother worrying about.

A blower won't warm up the case as much - I have had plenty of Shuttles,mini-ITX boxes, etc and I have not run an ATX system as my main build for like a decade. They are by far the best coolers for toaster type cases,as the cooler expels all of the hot air out of the back.

The main issue with the open coolers is that there is far greater likelihood for the hot air to be recycled back into the case after extended periods like at LANs. This is not such an issue with say lower TDP cards. They will work but the GTX980TI has a large TDP,and a lot of people will just stuff as much stuff as they can into smaller cases. Plus the other issue of whether the card will maintain its higher boost states too after a few hours of gaming.

It might be OK if you are the type which upgrades every year or so,but longterm not so sure. That is my opinion OFC as YMMV.

Plus, honestly if you are spending £500 on a card, something like a £500 Pascal GTX1080 should be faster, consume less power and probably be more compact that a GTX980TI.

On top of this you could get away with a smaller PSU which should cost less money and the less heat the system needs to handle the quieter it will be.

That is an important consideration too - the case is more likely to be near to you on the desk and unlike a large ATX case,it will be harder to reduce transmitted noise.

The Elite 120 which I used was OKish in this regard(not the best for cooling),but the Elite 130 is essentially the same case with a few extra holes and a mesh front, which probably makes it worse in this regard.

The 1080 will share the same prices as the current 980 non-ti, about 380 to 405 quid.

Are you talking about this video? There's a huge difference!

No case fans: CPU 71C, GPU 91C
1 case fan (exhaust): CPU 64C, GPU 85C
1 case fan (intake): CPU 67C, GPU 80C
2 case fans (intake + exhaust): CPU 60C, GPU 79C
3 case fans (2 intake + exhaust): CPU 58C, GPU 77C
4 case fans (2 intake + 2 exhaust): CPU 55C, GPU 76C

Airflow is very important, and an insufficient number of fans will definitely affect temperatures. Since small cases naturally have less space for fans, airflow becomes even more important for them. Given that a GTX 980 Ti is the hottest Maxwell card there is (tied with the Titan X, I guess), an mITX case is not ideal.
