GTX vs. ULTRA.

Yip sure as I said 3 choices.

1) He gets a GTX
2) He get a Ultra
3) He makes do till 9000's

Only he can make that choice though.

I certainly aint rich but timescale was 8 weeks ago, I could have bought a GTX that had been out a long time or a newer Ultra and when I was offered the model I like with the extra cooling at £70 off I took it.

Both are a good jump from my 7900GTX esp as can do HDR+AA and I want to play Bioshock and Crysis, I did play Lost Planet and DIRT but wont count as ports.

GTX is only better in money terms. In performance terms you can't beat the Ultra.

However most people recommend the GTX because the Ultra doesn't offer a big improvement in most situations. If you can find an Ultra around the £350 mark then it may be worth considering but in general the GTX represents much better value even if not overclocking.
 
Would people consider it a waste of money getting an Ultra if I want to use 1920x1200 in Bioshock and Crysis with high detail and at least some AA/AF enabled? Would it even be able to cope do you think in DX10? I have an 8800 GTS 640 at the moment and I'm just not sure what to do. It's a bugger getting such a big monitor really because running anything other than the native feels like a backward step ;)
 
My opinion is that it's futile trying to speculate about the performance of future games (especially those on new engines) until such time as the game/demo is released.

When you can actually run the games on your system, make a judgement then about whether you need an upgrade.

Yes it would run better but I would not go from a 8800GTS 640 to a GTX or Ultra, wait till 9000's you can game fine even if it aint max settings in upcoming games.
 
Ultra if you have money to burn, otherwise get the gtx.

Ultras have come down in price a fair bit now. Unless you have 1920 res or above then I don't see it the point in getting the ultra yet.

Well I want to use 1920, but with the irresistible price of 400 now for the Ultra (bear in mind I must be an idiot as I paid 510 for the GTX 512 on release) this seems like nothing! I wouldn't go SLI ever unless someone gave me a free card :)

If the 9800 series comes out in November I can just sell the Ultra and pay 100 quid. It isn't a lot extra for the difference.
 
I would not go from a GTS 640 to a Ultra this late in the day m8.

When you say GTX 512 is that a 7800GTX 512 or a 7900GTX as I can see you currently have a 8800GTS 640 ?.
 
7800 GTX 512. Bought that for £510 at launch and died less than a year later. XFX wouldn't give me another and would only replace it with a 7950GT so I sold it and put toward an 8800 GTS 640. If I sell that, put it toward the Ultra and use that until the 9800's come out I shouldn't lose too much. I want to play in 1920x1200 if possible and if these new cards don't come out in November as suspected I won't be playing Bioshock or Crysis as I want to :)
 
Well Dave thats your choice, if you can afford it and would get enjoyment out of it, where there are others who would rather p1$$ it up against a wall or smoke it, go for it lol. :)
