GTX480 SOC off for RMA - what to replace it with ?

thanks tommyboy - the card is old enough to not really loose much sweat really - its given me a good few years of use - even if its never ran at stock speeds out of the box (first RMA 1 1/2 years ago was rejected !)

just annoying when you buy a premium card - I kept all boxes etc mint as well - they can all go in the bin now lol

7950 is very tempting indeed :)

just wanted to give a quick up-date

the 570SOC that Gigabyte sent as a replacement seems a pretty nice card - I'm still annoyed that I've lost some VRAM - as I think this card has more grunt - but I'm noticing more stutters in benchmarks than the smoothness of the 480 - but there we go - can't do anything about it

the 570SOC they sent though - was in pristine condition - I think new as I couldn't see a mark on it (I would have expected a good refurb).

seemed to on very initial quick tests work out of the box at the correct speeds of 845 (pretty decent clock)

some quick fiddles with afterburner and managing 950 on the core and 1045 on the memory - and its much cooler than the 480 - after a run of Valley - 65C at those clocks

as for Valley - as said above - it seems to have the odd big stutter my 480 didn't have (perhaps hitting VRAM buffer limit) - BUT score much higher 1456 vs 1188 or so - pretty impressive for a 570 really

anyway - just wanted to say I'm still a bit miffed about loosing out on the VRAM - but credit where credit is due - the card Gigabyte sent as replacement is pretty nice on the whole - and the replacement came quickly

Just having to RMA mine off as the fans have failed (even on POST - so not driver related)

If it's unfix-able, should I push for the 570 SOC? Would you say anything less is not good enough?

The 570 SOC is what most people seem to be getting as a replacement (including myself), so you'll probably get that anyway. Yes, I certainly wouldn't settle for anything less than that.

Well they replaced the fan module, but on testing they found the card was knackared lol

So they are going to send me a replacement....not that they are going to tell me what it is though!

I've asked for either another 480 SOC, stock 580 or the 570 SOC. not a 570 SO.

They have said they have forwarded my request to the relevant people lol

Should be interesting

ASUS were kind to me and replaced a 6850 with a 7850 and it wasn't even 6 months old.

I guess it's just luck of the draw with these things, and how stubborn you can be haha.

What voltage are you using for 950?

I've dropped a bit as GPU had a funny turn when I installed one of the latest Nvidia drivers a few weeks back (possibily a coincidence)

I'm currently using 1.050V for 935/2270 mem - nice low temps and seems stable

the one hardest to get stable for me in past was Far Cry 3 - I'll try that later (it was immediately apparent if not stable)

but above is fine for 20 mins of Furmark ( :) max temp 81C ) and I played at least 9 hours of Borderlands 2 at weekend with no issue :)

I find with my card 900 runs at very low volts, but 935 is a nice extra bump

I think in borderlands 2 I was getting temps of only 62C or so at the 935 and 1.05V overclock
