gtx560ti upgrade to ?? for 2560 x 1440

yeah a mobo/cpu upgrade looks likely at some point :)

I have a stack of older games never got round to playing fully - now maybe a good time to install them while I save up some pennies...

Do i have the thread for you :) i was in your exact dilemma, even with the advantage of being an IT boffin i really wasnt sure how important the upgrade of CPU from overclocked Q6600 to better (i7 3770 in my case) was, when concerned with graphics. I was upgrading the gfx from an old 4850 to a 7850 (and eventually a 7950 lol). I detailed the benchmark results in the thread. Needless to say very glad i upgraded the cpu in some tests i saw over 30% improvement in gfx performance purely from the CPU upgrade. Furthermore as i clock the i7 further the graphics scores come back better showing that even a 4.4ghz i7 ivy is slightly bottlenecking a 7950.

ps ignore the idiots having a little semantics war in there

It's not about what's out right now, but what might be coming out in the next couple of years. If it were at 1080P, thumbs up no question but for 1440p I'd just be wary of 2GB.

Also, OP, it'd be well worth looking into OCing your CPU as has been said.

if we were talking 3 screens then I'd agree - but for single screen 1440 2GB will be fine to the point that you need tri-SLI - if you need tri-sli 670's then you need 4GB

no point thinking about what's out in 2 years time as there will be at least 1 if not 2 generations of graphics cards out by then which will be better suited to running high amounts of VRAM, there is no such thing as future proof when it comes to graphics cards

1. 1440p + 670/680/7970 + max everything = possibly 2gb+(some games) = low fps/gameplay

2. 1440p + 670/680/7970 + no AA and a few settings dropped = less than 2gb = high fps/gameplay.

#2 everytime and certainly in games like bf3.
Maybe 2gb+ is required when sli/cf is in use and more graphical power is available.

I can tell you that 2GB is not a limit at 1440p in SLI even at max everything in every game I've tested (including Skyrim though without hundreds of badly optimised texture packs), I would always choose 670 2GB SLI over a single 4GB card... a single 4GB 670 is totally pointless

the turning down settings that is needed with a single 670 is purely from the GPU not having enough juice to run at max at 1440p, nothing to do with VRAM limit

p.s. it's all rather moot as a Q6600 will bottleneck a 670 quite badly let alone 2
but 1GB 560ti's will definitely be VRAM limited at 1440p as they already are at 1080p

If you're going for 1440p I'd probably look at something with at least 3GB of VRAM like the 7950 or 7970, or the 4GB versions of the 670.

I wouldn't really recommend a 2GB card for 1440p.

No. Even at 5760*1080 (5800*1080 bezel corrected) I have enough VRAM with 2GB. At least give a link of proper benchmarks showing being VRAM limited to back up your claims??

GPU grunt limits me even at this resolution.

Also, I don't know why Nickolp1974 keeps posting incorrectly about VRAM usage without having properly tested using a 6** series card.
