GTX980Ti temperatures - help!

Hi guys,

Just so I know I'm not going insane. I have an Inno3D 980Ti iChill hybrid. It's an AIO water cooler model, with a single assist fan on the card itself.

For the past 8 weeks it's been working great, 65c under sustained load playing games, no issues.

The past few days it's shooting up to 80c within 10-15 minutes. LED indicator turns red - I first noticed the high temps because it's never turned red before, normally green/blue.

I've raised the issue but I've been told that 80c is normal for the card! I've tried to point out that this is not normal for this card but I keep getting 'its well within normal temps'.

Apparently a Manager at Inno3D said that '80s was very low for this card and some 980Ti's go to 100c' - somehow I'm not convinced by his technical knowledge. (the Nvidia ref 980ti is 85c, most are 70's)

So help me out. What do you think?

I would be concerned about a faulty AIO. It could be bad block contact with the core, but temperature jumps like that usually mean the pump died or there is some other issue with the AIO.

Is it making any weird noises?

The Inno3D "manager" sounds like he's fobbing you off.

65c under sustained load is too high in the first place unless you are over clocking.

Sounds like a failing pump, failed fan or the like to be honest.

Good luck

Just to add from my own experience (although TX) of load temps for some reference

Stock fan profile 1 card ~ 80c
Stock fan profile 2 cards ~ 85c top 75c bottom
Agressive profile 1 card ~ 70c
Agressive profile 2 cards ~ 75c top 65c bottom
EVGA AIO 2 cards ~ top 45c bottom 45c

I would expect no more that 50c on a stock clocked AIO card!

Thanks guys for the responses, appreciated.

Both tubes are hot to touch, rad is very hot to touch, backplate of the 980ti is very hot after about 10 minutes gaming. the 120mm fan on the rad is working though, so it must be the pump.

water cooling is not my thing at all.

This.

Not sure who is trying to fob you off but I suspect from the off that the pump wasn't working as it should and you shouldn't see these kinds of temps with that coller. Maybe 55C max but 80c is certainly too high.

Confirm it's the pump, by (temporarily) turning off all other system fans and listening for the pump noise. There should also be some vibration from the pump if you touch it.

I just turned the PC on its side and I got a sort of....gurgly water sound, and temps went from 80c down to 72c.

Haven't moved from 71 now even with furmark running for a good while now.

Good news it's made a difference, however temps should be low 50's absolute maximum for an AIO card. Anyone who says different is mistaken!

Where is the radiator and is the fan push or pull?

ETA try another couple of rotations, sounds like some air in the wrong place. AIO will have some air in it.

I just took it out of the case and gave it a decent shake.

Now the temp's are mid 50's playing Battlefront after 10 minutes, before it went pretty much straight to 70+ and hit 80 after 15 minutes.

Hopefully this is a once off and not something that happens frequently.

Thanks for all the advise.

Probably just were not listening when you said it was an AIO version. 80 degrees would be ok for an air cooled card but not, as has been said for an AIO one.

Idle temps should be in the mid 20s to early 30s. Heavy load should not be anymore than 50c.

Last summer I had 2 different Inno3D 980Tis burn out under the backplate (both got replaced under warranty I now have an MSI 980 Ti) do not think Inno3D QA is all that tbh

Keep a close eye on temps using GPUZ. I look at mine all the time on a H55+G10 AIO with dual fans (push/pull) I fitted myself as MSI warranty is still intact even if you remove the warranty sticker.

If you can try to fix another decent fan to the Radiator it makes about 3-5C lower temps in a push/pull config.

Is the pump the highest point in the loop?

Yup. It's at the back of the case, 120mm fan front and back of rad. pump is at top of rad, not bottom.

Seems to be holding up fine now after the shake-up, highest temp in a good Battlefront session was 63c, before that it was 80c in a shorter time.
